With great sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of Brice Morris Roughton, who rode out at sunrise on the tail of a snowstorm Thursday, February 20, 2025. Brice left earth peacefully after a difficult battle with Stage Four Cancer. He was 52.
Born November 26, 1972 in Norfolk, VA to Brenda Roughton Flanigan and David Earl "Coach" Roughton, Brice was a graduate of Kempsville High School Class of 1990.
Following high school, Brice attended vocational school for graphic design and pursued art school in Fort Lauderdale, FL, before returning to the ocean's call. He found true joy in music and being on the water. When recently asked his religion, it's no surprise he proudly proclaimed to the nurse, "Heavy Metal and the Ocean!"
A professional skimboarder, a commercial fisherman, a sea captain, a father, a teacher, an artist, a carpenter, a musician, a devoted Bro-Roadie to rock band Freedom Hawk, an ally to nature's critters, advocate to the underdog, and a lifelong world traveler in every aspect.
Brice is deemed Legend in the Victoria Skimboarding Hall of Fame, and historically heralded the East Coast Champion of Skimboarding in 1991. He also served as a lead contributor to the Skim USA organization, working for many years under the leadership of founder and mentor Harry Wilson.
Beyond the sands, Brice was a commercial fisherman. He hand built his first fishing boat "Flowyn" and launched Flowyn Fisheries LLC, in the early 2000s, which ran out of Lynnhaven Inlet.
He is survived by son Tanner (his mother Glowyn), brother Scott Roughton, sisters Kacie Zawistowski and Malinda Calma, Aunt Mary Sue Benoit (Glenn), Uncle Eric Coble, cousins Deb Roughton Krava (Tom), Brian Benoit and Brandon Cummings, many nieces and nephews, and his friend and companion Katy Larkin, who cared for him over the course of his illness into his final days. Brice was pre-deceased by his mother (1990), his father (2024) and his mother's sister Gayle (2020).
Brice had a deep gratitude and appreciation for the Mladick family, whose influence and guidance were instrumental following the untimely passing of his mother. Dr. Richard and wife Elly Mladick took Brice in at a challenging time, and gave him a loving home and support for which he was forever grateful.
To honor and remember Brice, the family will be having a private graveside burial of ashes at the resting place of his mother Brenda on her birthday in May. However, a larger memorial will be held later this spring at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Details of the memorial celebration will be updated on this page and Facebook @briceroughton as they are confirmed.
Rest in peace, BNice. You will be forever and always with us in spirit, sand, and sea. Until we meet again
