Carl Bahr Obituary

Carl Ernst Bahr, Jr., 90, passed away peacefully at his home on Jan. 18, 2025.

He was born on July 30, 1934, in Blue Island, Illinois, to Carl E. Bahr Sr. and Florence (Hilmer) Bahr. Carl grew up in Chicago and graduated from Chicago Vocational High School. He then worked at Acme Steel, where he started as an Electrical Construction helper. From 1957-1959 he served in the U.S. Army Ordinance Corps with classified special weapons and electronics training. While serving in the Army, he married the love of his life, Catherine Rose Szlaga. They moved first to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and then Romulus, New York, where Carl was stationed.

After his Army service, Carl continued his study of electronics at Wilson Junior College. For the next 30 years he worked at Acme Steel as an electrician and ultimately as General Foreman of Operations. Carl and Catherine raised their family first in Dolton and then Tinley Park, Illinois. In 1986, he started a new career at Brachs Candy as Superintendent of Maintenance and Utilities. Carl retired to Mountain Home, Arkansas, in 1998. He then taught computer classes at Donald W. Reynolds Library. He also volunteered as a tour guide at Bull Shoals Dam. Throughout his life, Carl was always willing to lend a hand wherever he was needed.

Carl lived an active life. He was a "jack of all trades" and could fix anything. Carl was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing, golf and camping. Along with hunting, he also enjoyed target shooting and was a life member of the NRA. He spent many years as a little league baseball coach and president of the Babe Ruth League. Carl traveled extensively with his family all over the United States, Canada and Europe.

Carl's greatest pleasure in life was being a husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Catherine, and their four children, Judith (Mark) Quaglieri (Wisconsin), Charles (Tammy) Bahr (South Dakota), Gregory (Lila) Bahr (Indiana), Joan (Matt) Hutchings (Colorado); 10 grandchildren, Matthew, Patrick, Joseph, Stephen, Mark, Harmoni, Tayla, Sarah, Julie, and Kaylyn; and one great grandson, Jack.

Carl's family loved him and he will be greatly missed.

Carl was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Mountain Home.

Services will be held at Conner Family Funeral Home on Feb 6, 2025. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m., with a memorial service at 1 p.m.
