Carl E. Johnson, 87 years old, a longtime Morgan County resident, went to heaven on Tuesday, July 15th, 2025, in the comfort of his home with loved ones by his side. His life began on Saturday, November 13th, 1937, in Shoals, Indiana, when he was born to the late John L. and Della Mae (Stearns) Johnson.
Carl and his brother, Jerry, opened Brothers Body and Paint in Indianapolis in 1957, expanding the business to Martinsville and Brownsburg, Indiana; eventually turning the Martinsville business over to his two sons, Pat and Mike. After his sons retired, Carl was proud knowing that his grandson, Ryan Johnson, would own and operate the business. In addition to the body shop, Carl formerly owned Brothers Auto Parts in Indianapolis, alongside his son, Jeremiah.
He had a love for aviation and was a licensed pilot and also managed the former Kelly's Airport in Mooresville, Indiana. He also enjoyed collecting classic cars and was a member of the Model A Club, and he was an avid NASCAR fan.
Carl attended the Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Mooresville, Indiana, and the First Baptist Church-St. James in St. James City, Florida
He leaves behind a host of loving family including his wife of nearly 53 years, Penny (Fann) Johnson of Martinsville; whom he married on December 16th, 1972; his sons, Patrick R. Johnson (wife, Becky) and John Michael Johnson (wife, Paula) all of Martinsville and Jeremiah Carl Johnson (wife, Misty) of Indianapolis; his daughter, Dawn Horock (husband, Tom) of Mooresville; brother, Jerald L. Johnson (wife, Faye) of Ft. Myers, Florida; sisters, Charlotte Weida of Franklin and Marilyn Stich-Scott (husband, David) of Plainfield; eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Along with his parents, Carl was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlotte Johnson Ashburn; sister, Betty Sander; and grandson, Michael Ashburn.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Tuesday, July 22nd, 2025, from 12:00 pm-2:00 pm at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center. A service celebrating Carl's life will begin at 2:00 pm on Tuesday immediately following the visitation at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest privately following the service at Nebo Memorial Park Cemetery in Martinsville.
