Carol J. Maxwell, age 83, of Whitewood, Virginia, died Tuesday, July 22, 2025, in a Pikeville, KY, hospital following a brief illness. She was born on April 3, 1942, in Whitewood, Virginia, and was the daughter of the late Joe Wimmer and Corby Goodman Wimmer. She made her home in Whitewood for most of her life. Over the last 20 years, she lived in Raleigh, North Carolina, Bristol, Virginia, and North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. She was a 1960 graduate of Whitewood High School. After raising three kids, she went back to school, earning an associate's degree from Southwest Virginia Community College, and receiving a BA degree from Virginia Intermont in 1994 alongside her son, Robbie. Carol loved to travel. She and her sister, Peggy, traveled across the United States, visiting 49 states. She also loved cruises and went on several with family members. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Pierce Maxwell; daughter, Kimberly Maxwell; son, Gregory Maxwell; grandson, Sam Cassity; and brother, Don Wimmer. She is survived by: Daughters: Teresa Maxwell of Whitewood, Virginia Sheila Cassity and husband, Jimmy of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina Son: Robert (Robbie) Maxwell and wife, Tara of Raleigh, North Carolina Brothers: Ron Wimmer of Abingdon, Virginia Jerry Wimmer of Abingdon, Virginia Sister, Peggy Cole of Bland County, VA Grandchildren: Joshua Maxwell Swarthout, Corey Maxwell Swarthout, Kelsey Maxwell Swarthout, Jamie Cassity, Ethan Cassity, Lily Maxwell, Pierce Maxwell, and Isaac Maxwell Great Granddaughter, Chayse Cassity Sisters-in-Laws: Ruby Maxwell of Salem, Virginia; Gay Maxwell of Whitewood, Virginia; Juanita Maxwell of Whitewood, Virginia; Shelby Maxwell of Jewell Ridge, Virginia A host of family and friends also survive. Funeral services for Carol J. Maxwell will be conducted Monday, July 28, 2025 at 2pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Clyde Wimmer officiating. Interment will follow at Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands, Virginia. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will have a visitiation from 1pm until 2pm prior to the funeral on Monday at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia.
