Carol Ann Mitchell, age 81, of Franklin, TN, and former longtime resident of West Frankfort, IL, passed away peacefully with her husband, Sam, and her daughter, Angela, by her side at 1:16 a.m. on Friday, June 27, 2025, in Tampa General Hospital of Tampa, FL.
She was born on November 9, 1943, in Vincennes, IN, the daughter of Loyd and Alice (Land) Jacobs.
Carol grew up on a farm in Illinois near the Indiana border. She attended a one-room schoolhouse early in her education. Later, she attended school in Lawrenceville, IL, and was a graduate of Lawrenceville High School. She continued with her education attending Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, IL, where she received her Masters of Business Education with a minor in Economics.
Her working career was as a Professor of Business with John A. Logan College for a total of 36 years until her retirement. During this time, she wrote a book for educators to use teaching business that has been used in the United States, Canada, and England. She was often to be found helping her students during her office hours whether they needed help with her classes or life advice. They would often come in to just "share her flowers" that her husband sent weekly. She was also very involved with the scholarship committee as providing educational opportunities to others was always very important to her. During her time at John A. Logan College, she was awarded the Excellence Award for teaching and the Faculty-of-the-Year Award in 1992. The award that meant the most to her was one that her students created and organized for "outstanding academic support and encouragement."
She was united in marriage to Samuel Everett Childers Mitchell on December 30, 1970, in Aspen, CO, and together they have shared over 54 years of marriage.
She has been a longtime member of the First Christian Church of West Frankfort, IL, and more recently a member of the Idlewild Baptist Church of Lutz, FL. She was also a longtime member of NBEA (National Business Education Association) and also a presenter at one point.
Carol loved to travel with her family and visited 21 countries over the years as well as many states within the United States. She loved to read fiction as well and would always take a book along. Christmases would often find her snow skiing with her family in Snowmass near where she and Sam were married. She also had her private pilot's license and especially enjoyed cross-wind landings.
She is survived by her husband, Sam C. Mitchell of Franklin, TN; daughter, Angela Carol Mitchell Green and husband, Jason Del Green, of Franklin, TN; grandchildren, Christopher Mitchell Green and Stella Carol Green, of Franklin, TN; sister, Betty Perfetti and husband, Gary Perfetti, of Collinsville, IL; great-aunt, Marilyn Mills, of Sarasota, FL; niece, Gina Durham and husband, Matt Durham, of Highland, IL; and great-nieces, Andi Durham, Paige Durham, and Emmy Durham as well as great-nephew, Aden Durham of Highland, IL, other extended family and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Loyd and Alice Jacobs, as well as her sister, Linda Jacobs, and her aunt, Margie Fisher.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Stone Funeral Home, 1201 East Poplar Street, West Frankfort, IL.
The visitation will be at Stone Funeral Home on Monday, July 7th from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Carol was my good friend and colleague at John A. College for the 17 years we taught together. Together with Carol Pullis, the three of us met most mornings to chat, often ate lunch together, and worked to make Logan a very good community college.

Carol had a wonderful life with her beloved Sam and her loving daughter Angie, and her two grands. All of us who knew her are extremely saddened by her demise. Rest in peace my heart friend.

Carol was my good friend and colleague at John A. Logan College for the many years I taught there. Carol Pullis, Carol Mitchell and I were a threesome who met every morning for coffee, often shared lunch and supported each other as we worked to make Logan a first rate community college. I give my deepest sympathy to Sam and Angie. I join all of Carol´s friends who will always miss her. Beverly (Gold) Segal.

Carol Mitchell was an outstanding faculty member at John A. Logan College for well over 30 years, and she was a particularly effective classroom teacher-
knowledgeable and available to her students and to staff and administration.
Carol´s death is a loss for many on a personal level, and the loss of a great teacher is a loss for all mankind.
