Carol Trussell Obituary

Funeral services for Carol O'Neal Trussell, 74, of Murchison, will be held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 2, 2024, at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens with interment following at Oaklawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Athens.
Carol passed away on June 28, 2025, in Athens, Texas, surrounded by family who loved her dearly.
Carol Ann Gunnels was born January 13, 1951, in Malakoff, Texas the daughter of Barney G. Gunnels Sr. and Onie (Carroll) Gunnels. She was a member of First Baptist Church Crossroads and was known as a generous woman who gave even when she didn't have it to give. She graduated from Malakoff High School where she played volleyball and later graduated from University of North Texas with an associate's degree as a paralegal. Carol managed the Ice House in Athens for many years where she enjoyed cooking for everyone and just spending time with her customers. She was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, a certified scuba diver, an accomplished seamstress and especially loved to sing, where she was even given the opportunity to go to Nashville but turned a career in music down to raise her family. Her greatest accomplishment was being a Meme and spending every waking moment with her grandkids. Carol will be missed by many.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Keith O'Neal, Shorty Trussell; siblings, Bob Gunnels, Barney Gunnels, Irma Gunnels, Doug Gunnels and brothers in law, Clyde Tyer and Ken Stone; and one great-granddaughter, Karlee Harris.
She is survived by her children, Kim Newman and husband Blaine of Murchison, Stephanie Fields of Mesquite, Keisha Jackson and husband Matt of Murchison, Wesley Trussell of Tyler; grandchildren, Kyle Harris and wife Olivia, Kolton Harris and wife Anna, Kanyon Harris, Kaleb Mandeville, Kendra Wakeham, Jasmine Wakeham, Mikey Fields, J.C. Fields, Mattie Jackson, Matthew Keith Jody Jackson, Journey Trussell; great grandchildren, Kole, Kason, Sophia, Kamryn, Elianna, Tinlee, Titus, Tanner, Ella Harris and her siblings, Roy Gunnels and wife Stacie, Rickey Gunnels and wife Pam, Marie Payne, Barbara Tyer, Joy Stone.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, July 1, 2025, from 6-8:00 p.m., at Hannigan Smith Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Sam Dyson, Jim Duncan, Chris Wansley, Patrick Mayne, Craig Godby and J.C. Fields. Dewayne "Trigger" Walker will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home family.
