Catherine "Cathy" J. Schlabach
Age 62, of Au Gres, Michigan, passed away at her home with family and friends by her side on June 6, 2025. Cathy was born on March 30, 1963, in Wyandotte, Michigan, where she grew up being raised by her parents Robert and Valerie Doherty. Cathy met the love of her life and her best friend, Paul Schlabach in the late 1990's, and the two shared 28 amazing years together. After many years of taking on life together, they were married on June 10, 2017. Paul and Cathy had five children between the two of them, and they adored all of them dearly. Cathy disliked politics and it was a surefire way to get the silent treatment from her, which was rare given she was always Facetiming with her grand and great grandkids, transposing her words, clueless of why everyone was was laughing until it was explained to her, Sometimes she was the one who had to explain things, her jokes weren't always clear. While she loved her family, Walker's name was one she felt didn't fit so she called him Hunter from birth, true to Cathy' stubborn ways. Cathy's heart was not only for her own family but also for those who may have been in need of a roof over their head and an endless dose of Cathy's wisdom and advice, though everyone was "lucky enough" to receive Cathy's wisdom and advice, whether they wanted it or not, especially if any of her kids were disagreeing. She would be on that phone or in their living room making sure they didn't stay upset for long, She couldn't stand her kids not getting along; she was the glue that held the family together. She loved her morning coffee on the patio with Paul and all his friends, whether they were invited or not. She enjoyed fishing and would out fish them all anyway! Gardening was a love that she shared with anyone who even looked at the garden, especially her grandkids. She always had little gifts for them when they would come over and have quite a collection of fun garden figures for them to play in the garden with when they aren't helping to tend the garden. Cathy was a fashionista during her daughter's Lularoe Era and she loved her "Lularoo" and showing off her EXTENSIVE collection. Cathy is known for her funny little dances, wet willies, biting her tongue when she was upset or mad, chain smoking, or, when Facetiming with family became more of a struggle, sticking her tongue out and squishing her face to entertain her grandbabies who she Facetimed with daily.
Cathy in survived by her loving husband, Paul Schlabach; children, Tamara Hundley; Ryan (Judy) Hering, Edward (Sophie) Baron III, Samantha (Cody) Volway, and Darcy (Cody) Wendling; mother, Valerie Doherty; brothers, Robert (Carrie) Doherty, David (Lisa) Doherty, Tim (Michelle) Doherty, Pat (Paula) Doherty, Delisle (Lila) Doherty, and Christopher (Anthony) Doherty; sisters, Debbie Moats, Sue (Ron) Pattenaude, Jerene (Jeff) Koenig, Delilah Milne, and Faith (Jim) Danosky; grandchildren, Alexis (Tanner), Dakota, Braesyn, Edward IV, Braedyn, Tessa, Reagan, Teagan, Walker, Tatum, and Brantley; her great grandchildren, Payson and Oakes; and many nieces and nephews.
Cathy is preceded in death by her father, Robert Doherty; step-daughter, Kelly Schlabach; husband, Edward Baron II; brother-in-law, Timothy Moats; sister-in-law, Tamara Baron; and nephew, Austin Milne.
Cathy was an immensely dedicated and loving mother, wife, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. She was gone too soon and will be missed by many.
Per Cathy's wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a celebration of life held for her at a later date.
