Charles "Chuck" John Butera, beloved husband, brother, father, uncle, grandpa, great-grandpa, friend, and all-around great guy, quietly passed away on May 15, 2025, in Sycamore, IL.
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Chuck and his sister (Sally) grew up in Chicago near Wrigley Field and Lincoln Park. As a youth, he spent much of his time at the Boys and Girls Club, where he excelled as a swimmer, diver, fierce football player, and Golden Gloves boxer. His love of music and movement came alive when he won a dance contest on American Bandstand performing the jitterbug. A lifelong Chicago sports fan, he was a devoted follower of the Bears and Cubs. His favorite meal was spaghetti (not mostaccioli!) and meatballs, followed by apple pie and ice cream.
Chuck was known for his quick wit, contagious humor, and generous heart. Always ready to lend a hand, he brought laughter and light to every gathering, truly the life of the party.
He met and married the love of his life, Roberta (Bert) Sue Davenport, and after starting their family in Chicago, they settled in Hanover Park, where they spent 52 wonderful years together. Their nearly 56-year marriage was sadly cut short by Roberta's passing in 2015. In 2016, Chuck moved to DeKalb to be closer to family.
Together, Chuck and Roberta raised five children, Laura (Ed) Bucaro, Tom (Rose Mattingly), Chuck, Christina (Shawn) Riebel, and Scott (Jayne Sipiera); They were blessed with 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The strength of their love helped the family endure the heartbreaking loss of their grandson, Daniel Butera, at age 18.
Chuck was a hardworking man throughout his life. He began his career as a printer with Rand McNally, then worked as a cement mason, and eventually retired from General Mills. To support his family, he often took on second jobs, including a beloved role creating ice rinks for the local park district. In retirement, he continued to give back, working part-time at his granddaughter's school and volunteering with the Sycamore Museum and Northwestern Cancer Center.
An active YMCA member for over 50 years, Chuck prioritized health, community, and time with family. On December 5, 2024, he moved into Lincolnshire Assisted Living, beginning a new chapter surrounded by care and companionship. The family would like to thank the staff at Lincolnshire Place for their dedication and devoted professionalism.
Chuck's life was defined by his hard work, humor, love for family, and deep dedication to others. He leaves behind a legacy of resilience, kindness, vision of his infectious smile and laughter that will be cherished by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Chuck's life will be held at Olson Funeral & Cremation Services Quiram Chapel, 1245 Somonauk St., Sycamore, IL 60178, on Friday, May 23, 2025 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm and Saturday, May 24, 2025 from 9:00 - 10:00 am followed by a service at 10:00 am. A meal for family and friends will follow.
