Charles Wellington Coe, lovingly known as "Charlie," passed away peacefully on June 28, 2025, at the age of 93. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Charlie lived a rich and meaningful life grounded in service, love, humility, and joy.
Born and raised in Medford, Massachusetts, Charlie was shaped by a strong sense of duty and deep-rooted values. After high school, he proudly served in the United States Air Force, stationed at Burtonwood RAF Base during the Korean War. While in England, he played semi-professional hockey for the Liverpool Leopards-a reflection of his lifelong passion for
competition and camaraderie.
In 1956, Charlie joined the Massachusetts State Police, beginning a 20-year career filled with honor, purpose, and deep brotherhood. He retired as a Lieutenant, having earned the respect of his fellow troopers and a reputation for integrity and calm leadership. During that time, he also earned a B.S. from Boston State College-preparing for what became his
second career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where he served as Chief of Contracting until his retirement in 1996.
But perhaps the most beautiful chapter of Charlie's life began when he met Sue Ann Smyth-the love of his life and his forever partner. Together, they shared a love story full of laughter, grace, and quiet strength. Their song, Anne Murray's "Could I Have This Dance," said it all. They could often be seen gliding effortlessly across the dance floor, completely in sync. They just fit. They were that couple. Their connection was unmistakable, and their deep love carried them, hand in hand, all the way.
Charlie was a man who radiated quiet strength and kindness. There was no bravado, no need for attention-just a deep and genuine happiness for others, and a way of making everyone around him feel at ease. His calm presence made you feel safe, and his steady encouragement gave you the confidence to chase your dreams. When his daughter Sandy considered the then-unconventional path of going to chiropractic school in Iowa-a time when the profession was far less accepted-Charlie simply told her, "There's nothing you can't do." The certainty in his voice was enough to make her believe it-and she did.
Charlie's love of sport and country ran deep and became a special bond between generations. His son Larry followed in his footsteps with a distinguished 30-year career supporting the United States Air Force and, like his dad, took up hockey officiating. And it was on the golf course where Larry's son Alex joined in. The three generations found common ground and connection on the course, spending Sunday mornings together, enjoying the game, the fresh air, and each other's company. Those rounds became treasured moments that stitched time and love into lasting memories.
Charlie was also a lifelong brother to his fellow State Police officers, sharing stories, laughter, and good-natured rivalry, especially during winters in Naples, Florida. And every evening, no matter what the day held, he and Sue could be found playing a competitive game of cribbage-just one of the many rituals that defined their deep and joyful bond.
Charlie was predeceased by his parents Charles and Nathalie Coe; his brother Donald; his son-in-law Mathew Masters; many extended family members; and pretty much all of his dearest friends.
He leaves behind the love of his life, his wife Sue; his son Larry and daughter-in-law Diane; his daughter Sandy Masters; Stephen Sostilio; and his cherished grandchildren Michelle Coe, Alex Coe, and Katie Pearson, and their partners/spouses Brian Neri and Sean Pearson. He was also the proud great-grandfather of two-year-old Hailey, who brought a sparkle to his eyes and joy to his heart.
Charlie's life was a beautiful blend of service, sport, love, and legacy. He will be remembered for his humility, his deep affection for family and friends, and his unwavering belief in the good in others.
The family will gather privately to honor Charlie's life.

Sue and the Coe Family

Everyone who knew Charlie will miss a great friend. Years ago I met Charlie on the Mass Pike when he stopped me for speeding on my way home from the Marines for a weekend - received a verbal warning and a be "careful". Years later we met again after I joined the MSP and went on to become associates on the Former Mass Troopers Board for many years - had fun in Naples, golf, and parties with Sue and Charlie. He will be missed.

Respectfully
