Charles Samuel Holden Jr., known affectionately to many as "Chuck," passed away on February 3, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, ambition, and humble reliability that will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. Charles was born on November 22, 1944, in Peru, Indiana. He spent his youth growing up on a farm in rural Michigan. His childhood was full of adventure and mischief which eventually led to him enlisting in the United States Navy where he proudly served over four years and was a Vietnam veteran.
Charles spent most of his career working in construction. He also owned Ace Hardware and Bakertown Lumber and spent the last of his working years owning and operating Chuck's Construction where he built many quality barns still seen today around the local area. His skill extended beyond the physical structures he created in his professional life; he also built a strong and loving family, as well as a community of friends and colleagues who respected and admired him.
Charles found solace and tranquility in gardening, his hands working the earth as skillfully as they crafted structures. Some of his favorite memories were those he spent camping and fishing with his family. He also enjoyed Las Vegas and spent many birthdays and vacations there. He was a lifetime member of the Buchanan American Legion and the Moose Lodge. He spent many years volunteering in various positions and hosted numerous annual summer Legion picnics at his home; his presence and service will be greatly missed. Charles had an adventurous spirit and fulfilled dreams of traveling in retirement with trips to Alaska and Maine. He will be remembered by those who knew him best as a tough, determined, hardworking man who fiercely loved and protected his children and family.
Charles is survived by his daughter, Sam (Clint) Ward, his son, Mike (Teresa) Holden, and his sister, Mary (Kim) Hedges. His love and legacy continue through his grandchildren, Chad Holden, Dr. Kelsie (Mike) Goodwin, Henry Ward, Wyatt Ward, and Katie Ward, as well as his nephews, Jeff (Judy) Kelly and Dale Kelly. He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Sr., and his mother, Betty Collinsworth.
Those who knew Charles are invited to share their memories and upload photos to his memorial page. His life was a testament to the power of ambition tempered by love and humility, and we encourage all who knew him to honor his life by sharing the moments that captured these qualities most. Charles Holden's legacy will live on, not just in the structures he built, but in the hearts and memories of those who loved him.
Family and friends are invited to join in celebrating Charles Holden's life on February 16, from 2-5 pm at the Buchanan American Legion.
