Charlotte Hensrud McMullen of Mayville, ND passed away on Sunday, Dec 8, 2024 at the age of 93.
Charlotte, the 5th of 8 children, was born on February 23, 1931 to Oscar and Ida (Docken) Hensrud on the farm her grandfather homesteaded in 1877, Mekinock, ND. Her memories included ice skating on the Turtle River, driving the truck down the field as her brothers loaded potato sacks and music every evening. She remembered how proud she was when she could accompany her father who played the violin. Her love of music, be it singing or as an accompanist continued her entire life.
She attended grade school in Mekinock and went on to Central HS in Grand Forks. Her college work was completed at Mayville State and the University of Colorado. She obtained a Master's Degree in Education at UND. She held teaching positions at various schools throughout her life concluding with GST Educational Services as a Specific Learning Disabilities consultant traveling to schools in all three counties. After retiring from education, she worked at the ARCH office located at MSU until 2010.
Charlotte married James C. McMullen in 1955. Jim was a fighter pilot in the USAF so their married life was spent in different places. Dave and Don were born in New Mexico and Shari in Omaha. They moved to Mayville after Jim retired in 1976.
Always active in organizations, Charlotte served in leadership roles in the Mayville Women's Club, Mayville Lutheran choir and Mary Circle, M-300 Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, Sons of Norway, Pioneer Daughters and Retired Teachers organization. In later years, she also served as president of the Mayville Senior Center board for 6 years and president of Traill County Council on Aging. She was also active in church work wherever she lived.
Survivors include sons Dave (JoAnn) of Portland, ND. Don of Devils Lake, ND and daughter Shari (Don) Larson of Surprise, AZ; sisters Shirley Anthony of Stockton, CA and Arlene (Dick) Ebersole of Dover, DE; grandchildren Jim, Alex and Ryan McMullen, Alicia Johnson, Brianne Olson, Amanda McMullen, Darren Larson, Dana Stillman, Sara Nienke, Britta Diaz; 23 great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Jim; sisters Elaine Fowler, Lucille Pitt and Karen Maher, brothers Elwood and Lloyd as well as daughter-in-law Vicky Howes McMullen.
Services celebrating her life will be 1:00pm Monday, December 16, 2024 at Mayville Lutheran Church. Visitation will be one hour prior and after the service.
