Christine Rose FitzSimons Byrnes died Tuesday, April 29, 2025, in Kensington, Maryland,
surrounded by members of her large and loving family. She was 98.
She was born Aug. 8, 1926, in Covington, Louisiana, and graduated from Louisiana State
University, where she met her future husband, the late Dr. Vincent Malcolm Byrnes.
A resident for many years of Ethel, Louisiana, she was a warm and loving mother of seven
children, and a devoted grandmother and great grandmother. She was also a caregiver for her
own mother. Christine Byrnes was a devout Roman Catholic who served as a lector at her church in Clinton,
Louisiana, was a member of the Secular Franciscan Order for 70 years, and was a volunteer at
the St. Vincent de Paul soup kitchen in Baton Rouge. She was a gifted artist who pursued painting in her later years. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Laure and Francis Joseph FitzSimons
Sr. of Covington; her brothers, Francis Joseph FitzSimons Jr., Nicholas FitzSimons and Robert
FitzSimons, all of Covington; her sister, Elizabeth Arnaud of San Antonio, Texas; and one
grandchild, Vijay Nagendra of New Orleans. Survivors include her children, Laura (William) Moody of Ethel, Mary (H.V.) Nagendra of New Orleans, Walton Malcolm (Noni) Byrnes of Kensington, Francis Joseph (Lauri) Byrnes of Ocala, Florida, Amy (John) Metzel of Springfield, Virginia, Una (David) Anderson of New Orleans, and John Byrnes of New Orleans; 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life and Rosary will be held at 10 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m.
on Saturday, May 24th, 2025 at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, 11444 Church St. in
Clinton, Louisiana. Interment will follow at Redwood Cemetery, 5182 Highway 412 East in
Slaughter, Louisiana.
