Retired U. S. Navy Seabees Captain and Korean War Veteran, Mr. Chuck Miller age 93 of the Tanglewood Community, transitioned from his earthly journey to his heavenly reward at 3:10 a.m. Sunday morning February 15, 2026 at the Knollwood Manor in Lafayette where he had made his home since April 16, 2025.
Mr. Miller was at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home; He was cremated at the Cumberland Family Services in Algood and no public services are planned.
He was born Charles Donald Miller in Pedro in Lawrence County, Ohio on June 23, 1932 and was one of two sons of the late Dennis Miller and Pauline Worley Miller.
He was preceded in death by a son, Eric Miller, who died July 16, 2015 at the age of 53, and by his brother Gerald (Jerry) Miller.
Mr. Miller was a 1950 graduate of Waterloo High School in Waterloo, Ohio and following graduation from high school he entered the United States Navy in Huntington, West Virginia on February 23, 1951. His active-duty assignment was completed on December 20, 1954 at the Naval Air Station in Sanford, Florida. His final retirement from the U. S. Navy Reserves was in July of 1992.
After fulfilling his active-duty status and going to reserve status, he attended and graduated from the University of Florida in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
At the Smith County Government Annex Building in Carthage, he was united in marriage to Macon County native, the former Janice Kay Carr. Then Smith County Executive, Judge Jack Kittrell performed the ceremony on December 10, 1981.
Following graduation, Chuck began employment with the Ethyl Corporation in Ohio and in 1970 was transferred to the William L. Bonnell Corporation in Gordonsville where he served as plant engineer until his retirement in 1994.
After the passage of the 911 legislation in 1990, Chuck became a charter member of the Smith County Emergency Communications Board representing industry and began the codifying of over seven hundred roads in Smith County so as to have no duplicate road names. He served on the board for almost twenty-five years.
Surviving in addition to his wife Jan, of over forty-four years, are five children, Diana Tyson of Ironton, Ohio, Gina Martin of South Point, Ohio, Kevin Miller and wife Lesli, Elizabeth Miller and fiancée Max Straub all of Mount Juliet, Julie Whitnel and husband Brian of Lebanon; ten grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
