George L. Serene, 93, Grantville, passed away on March 3, 2025 at his home. George was born August 17, 1931 in Welda Kansas, the son of George “Vernie” Serene and Emily E. (Riebe) Serene.
He made a lifelong career in the road construction industry beginning in 1948. An asphalt laborer to operator to general superintendent. And officially retiring in the 1990’s.
He was called to duty in the Korean War and spent two years stationed on the 39th parallel in Japan. He was proud to serve his country and has held the American Flag as one of his most treasured possessions.
George married Doris Jean Jones on September 14, 1957 in Miami, Oklahoma. They shared 60 years of marriage before her death in 2017.
George leaves behind daughters Jean (Tim) Tibbits, Meriden; Mary (Chrystal Dye) Serene, Topeka; 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 6 great great grand childen and a sister, Shirley Hicks. He also leaves behind a very large extended network of family and friends. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, one great-great-granddaughter and his sister, Dorothy Jones.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00am on April 19, 2025 at Parker-Price & Davidson, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, Kansas 66608.
