Cole Robert Matson, 21, of Centralia, passed away tragically in a farm accident on Tuesday, July 8, 2025. His sudden passing leaves a deep ache in the hearts of his family, friends, and the entire agricultural community who knew and loved him.
Born on March 29, 2004, in Seneca, Cole was the beloved youngest son of Dan and Jennifer (Meade) Matson. He grew up in a home filled with love, laughter, and a strong connection to the land. From a young age, Cole showed a remarkable dedication to farming and livestock, a passion that only deepened as he grew older. His childhood was filled with the simple joys of rural life: tagging along with his dad on the farm, raising cattle, and soaking in every ounce of wisdom passed down through generations.
Cole was a proud 2022 graduate of Centralia High School. He was a dedicated member and volunteer of 4-H. He never missed a workday and gave countless hours to support the next generation of 4-H youth. Cole continued his education at Highland Community College, earning a degree in Precision Agriculture in 2022. In 2024, he graduated from Southeast Community College with a degree in Livestock Management and Production, along with certification in Artificial Insemination-cementing his lifelong commitment to the cattle industry.
Cole worked as a feed salesman for Midwest Livestock, serving producers across Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa. His knowledge and genuine care for the producers he worked with earned him deep respect across his region. Whether he was knee-deep in a muddy pasture or talking shop at a feedlot, Cole led with integrity, humility, and a genuine passion for helping others succeed.
Work never defined Cole-it was just one part of a vibrant life. He was the kind of guy who drove a beat-up Ford Tempo so he could afford his first heifer. He had a sixth sense for spotting smoke and was always ready to lend a hand to the Centralia Fire Department-even though he was never officially on the roster. He helped toss candy every Fourth of July, loved being outdoors, and had a heart that was always bigger than the task at hand. If someone needed help, Cole never hesitated–he just showed up.
One of his greatest joys came from being "Uncle Cole" to his nephew Braxton, Cole lit up whenever Braxton was nearby. He also found a loyal companion in his pup, Tator, a scrappy mix of bloodlines who became his faithful sidekick on every road, at every pasture, and the moments in-between.
But more than his work, Cole will be remembered for his kind heart, big smile, and the unwavering love he had for those close to him. On October 4, 2024, Cole became engaged to the love of his life, Joee Bussmann. The two shared a bond rooted in shared values, deep affection, and plans for a beautiful future together.
Cole is survived by his fiancée, Joee Bussmann; his parents, Dan and Jennifer Matson of Vermillion; his brother Alex (Shelby) Matson and their son Braxton of Centralia; his grandparents, Tom and Rheta Matson of Vermillion, and Robert and Terri Meade of Centralia. He also leaves behind his loyal pup Tator; his best friend, Drew Rumbo of Baileyville; and his extended family, Joe, Shannon, Chloe, and Branden Bussmann all of Frankfort. Countless aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and colleagues will remember Cole for his generosity, humor, and the warmth he brought to every room-and every pasture.
Cole's life, though far too short, was lived with purpose, grit, and heart. He leaves behind not only memories but a legacy of hard work, love for agriculture, and deep devotion to family and a willingness to serve his community in quiet, powerful ways.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, July 13th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, July 14th at 10:00 AM at the Centralia High School Gymnasium. Cole will be laid to rest in the Vermillion Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorials be directed to: The Centralia Fire Department for Jaws of Life equipment and/or The Marshall County Fair, to support the addition of a Small Animal Wash Rack-projects that reflect Cole's values and commitment to agriculture and community.

I didn´t know Cole but the saying"Only the good die young "
comes to mind. Sounds like he was quite the young man. May he RIP in the arms of Jesus.
