"Ozzie Osborne was a rock legend that died recently. Hulk Hogan was a wrestling legend that passed away recently. Let me tell you about another legend that just passed away, Lee Biggerstaff. He was a larger than life, seven foot tall, hard driving friend and teacher to us young, just beginning truck drivers. He owned his own truck and did it his way, an inspiration to us young and crazy drivers. No, he really wasn't seven foot tall, but he was larger than life to us. Grab another gear, Lee, get to heaven. Your trip is finished and now it's your time to rest. He was like a legend to me. He was a person that if you knew him, he was a special breed and an inspiration. The world has lost a good one. Written by Roy "Possum" Winters, coworker, driver, friend.
Columbus Lee Biggerstaff, 87, of Rutherfordton, passed away July 29 at his home. He was a native of Avery County, NC. to Joe and Sylvia Pritchard Biggerstaff. He was fortunate to have had two occupations that he greatly loved - farming and over the road truck driver as an owner operator. After his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking and working with his hands. He grew up in a time where there was pride in workmanship and he used that pride and talent to help others in the community through many projects through the church that he and his wife faithfully attended. He didn't send his family to church, he went along with them.
He was predeceased by his parents, Joe and Sylvia Pritchard Biggerstaff, brother, Billy R. Biggerstaff, sister, Sarah Jo Biggerstaff Lattimore.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn Womack Biggerstaff, of the home. Daughters Noel Biggerstaff of Rutherfordton, Karen Biggerstaff Patterson (Randy) of Spindale and son, Dustin Biggerstaff (Robyn) of Snohomish, WA. Five grandchildren, Lee Pace(Amanda), Kirsten Brown(Dustin), Caroline Westerson (Chris), Chloe Patterson, Gavin Patterson, Jack Biggerstaff, Hattie Biggerstaff, Nola Biggerstaff, four great grandchildren Natalie Smith, Zoey Brown, Braylee Pace, LJ Pace. Also, a cousin more like a brother, Larry Joe Biggerstaff, of Rutherfordton, several nieces, nephews and special cousins.
The family will be receiving friends Wednesday August 6 from 6-8 at Crowes Mortuary and Chapel 118 College Ave., Rutherfordton, NC 28139. The funeral will be held Thursday, August 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Green Hill Baptist Church 1941 64/74 A, Rutherfordton, NC 28139 where Military Honors will be provided by the Rutherford County Honor Guard for his service in the Air Force. The service will be officiated by Pastor Joshua Calvert and Pastor Matthew Moore. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be sent in memory of Lee, to the Green Hill Baptist Church Cemetery Fund. Online condolences may be made at www.crowemortuary.com.
