In Loving Memory of Cynthia Elaine Sullivan
June 21, 1953 – July 3, 2025
Cynthia Elaine Sullivan, a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025, at the age of 72. Born on June 21, 1953, in Birmingham, Alabama, she was the beloved daughter of the late Norman and Louise Sullivan.
At just three years old, Cynthia moved with her parents and siblings to Cleveland, Ohio-a city that would become her lifelong home. She attended St. Adalbert Elementary School and later East High School before earning her GED through Vocational Guidance Services (VGS). It was at VGS where Cynthia's journey into public service began, starting in the typing pool and eventually blossoming into a remarkable federal career.
Cynthia proudly served with the Department of Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS), dedicating 32 years of her life to the agency before retiring. Her work professionalism, loyalty, and unmistakable spark left a lasting impact on her colleagues and the work she so faithfully carried out.
But Cynthia's proudest role was that of a matriarch. She was the heart of her family-steadfast and nurturing. She is lovingly remembered by her three daughters: Catrease Hancock (wife Norika Hancock), Shayla Murray (husband Mel Murray), and Tyeacha Scott. Her legacy lives on through her treasured grandchildren: Davondre Burkes, Evan Scott, Cameron Reid, Caiden Reid, Heaven Scott, Myles Russell, and Kayla Murray, as well as her sweet great-granddaughter, Harlow Burkes. Cynthia is now reunited in peace with her beloved grandson, Kaleb Anthony Murray, who preceded her in death just four months ago.
She was a caring sister to Linda Tyler and Jerome Sullivan, and is now joyfully reunited with her siblings Brenda, Michael, and Vanessa Sullivan.
One of Cynthia's fondest memories was of her grandmother, Vernell "Bigma" Corley, whose words of wisdom echoed throughout Cynthia's life: "Keep that good government job." And so she did-building a life grounded in love and purpose.
Cynthia had a special way of bringing her family together. She loved nothing more than sharing meals, laughter, and stories, especially at family cookouts. She especially adored barbecue made by Eddy, her bonus son, and Mel. Wherever Cynthia was there was always a place of warmth, laughter and togetherness.
Those who knew Cynthia will never forget her vibrant personality, generous heart, and unwavering devotion to the people she loved. Her spirit lives on in every life she touched and in the bonds she helped nurture and protect.
