Darlene L. Brown, 92, of Altamont, passed away the morning of Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at Advena Living of Cherryvale.

Darlene Lula Conrad was born on November 8, 1932, to Elwood and Margaret (Burnell) Conrad in Derby, Kansas. She grew up and attended school in Derby, graduating from Derby High School in 1952.

On July 25, 1952, Darlene married her high school sweetheart, John L. Brown, in Derby, Kansas. The couple later moved to the Mound Valley area, where Darlene made a comfortable and loving home for her family. For a few years, she worked as a cook at Mound Valley Grade School.

For several years, Darlene volunteered at the New Life Clothing Store in Altamont. She was an avid quilter and enjoyed reading romance novels and working on jigsaw puzzles. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include:

One son – Kirk Brown (Vicky) of Parsons, Kansas

One daughter – Johnia M. Franklin of Altamont, Kansas

Four grandchildren - Cody Brown of Altamont, Kansas; Haley Brown of Cherryvale, Kansas; Cynthia Kinser (Armond) of Edna, Kansas; and Julia Ames (Tim) of Altamont, Kansas

Seven great-grandchildren - Cole Brown, Talan Bentley, Shane Smith, Delaney Brown, Virginia Kinser, Ember Kinser, and Luna Ames

Several nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John L. Brown, on September 27, 2011; two daughters, Dana Brown and infant Diane Brown; one grandson, Johnathan Smith; two brothers; and two sisters.

The graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at Mound Valley Cemetery. Friends may stop by Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home to sign the register book from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to New Life Clothing Store. These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
