Darrel Gene Brewington, from Maquoketa, IA, passed away on July 8, 2025, at the age of 85.
The Carson Celebration of Life Center is helping the family, and following Darrel's wishes, cremation will take place. A family gathering to celebrate his life will be planned in the future. A private burial will be at the Genoa Township Cemetery in Genoa, IL.
Darrel Gene Brewington was born on October 23, 1939, near Brookland, Arkansas, to George Elvis (John) and Vivian Inez Brewington. He was educated in the country schools near the foothills of Missouri. The family moved to Cardwell, MO around 1950. The family farmed cotton, soybeans, and corn. As the oldest boy, Darrel played an integral part in planting and harvesting the crops before and after school. In 1957, he finished his formal schooling when the family moved from Cardwell, MO to Elgin, IL, where he attended additional classes at the community college.
Darrel found employment at the St. Charles Kitchens Co. and worked there for 7 years, followed by work for the City of Elgin. In 1972, he started a trucking / excavating and commercial snowplowing business (Brewington Trucking). He continued to operate the company until retirement in 1998.
Darrel met his future wife, Carolyn Louise McCarthy, on a blind date at a football game at Elgin High School. They married in 1958 and recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. Together, they raised 5 beloved children, and now enjoy 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. In 1976, the family moved to Sycamore, IL where they built a home on country acreage. The family enjoyed a "hobby farm" with a variety of animals, including goats, horses, a couple of steers, chickens, ducks, and many dogs and cats.
Early on, Darrel had been an avid CB radio and Ham operator, and for many years belonged to a popular radio club, The Livewires. He also was a raccoon hunting enthusiast working with Black & Tan hounds. He belonged to the Oswego, IL Coon Hunters Club, in which he was president for a time. Darrel enjoyed field trials with his hounds in a tri-state area and won several awards.
Darrel became interested in restoring antique tractors, which followed him to his retirement in 1998 when he and Carolyn moved to Maquoketa, IA. He developed a reputation of being successful working on all models of tractors, and would often take tractors to local parades. Darrel also loved to collect and repair watches and clocks, a hobby which kept him working in his "man cave" on many evenings. Darrel relished his morning workouts at the YMCA, with coffee-time afterwards at the local McDonalds, sharing the latest news with his local senior friends who gathered there.
Those left to honor Darrel's memory include his wife, Carolyn Louise Brewington, his children, Brenda Perez, Shawn (Robin) Brewington, Sevina (Jeff) Roseman, Dion (Mindy) Brewington, and Tiffany Brewington, as well as his grandchildren, Kyrie, Cody, Ruby, Jensen, Marrisa, Sarah, Devon, Brendon, Jade, and great grandchildren, Tatum, Dekyrie, Sentry, and Maeve. Also surviving are Darrel's sister-in-law, Violet Brewington, and nieces, Karen Brewington, Jerry Lynn Rothblum, Susan Miller, nephew Bruce Miller, and grand nephew, Tanner Brewington.
Darrel was preceded in death by his parents, John and Inez Brewington, his brother, Doris Mack (Violet) Brewington, his sister, Betty Sue (Jerry) Miller, and niece, Tami Brewington. Online condolences may be left at www.CarsonAndSon.com.
