Obituary published on Legacy.com by Welch Funeral Home from Jul. 5 to Jul. 6, 2025.
Darrell Phillip Moore, age 72, of
Longview, Texas, formerly of Schererville, Indiana, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on July 3, 2025. He was born on August 1, 1952, in Bath, Maine, to Shirley Hunnewell Mosher, and was later adopted by his father, Albert Alsford Moore.
Darrell trusted Christ as his Savior at the age of seven during a Vacation Bible School at First Baptist Church of Woolwich, Maine. From that day forward, his life was marked by faithful service to the Lord. He surrendered to preach as a child and spent more than four decades in gospel ministry.
He was a graduate of Morse High School (1970) and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science (1982) and a Master of Education (1986) from Hyles-Anderson College. He was later honored with a Doctor of Divinity (1990).
Darrell served as Administrative Vice-President of Hyles-Anderson College, Missions Pastor of First Baptist Church of Hammond, and General Director of Fundamental Baptist Missions International. For many years, he also led the Evening College at Hyles-Anderson, where he poured his life into training working men for the ministry-men he loved deeply and invested in personally.
One of the most defining aspects of Darrell's ministry was his faithful bus route in Chicago. For over 30 years, he joyfully served families by bringing children and adults to church each week, building lasting relationships and showing the love of Christ one doorstep at a time. He especially loved and appreciated the faithful workers and leaders of Division 8 in the bus ministry of First Baptist Church of Hammond, who labored with him year after year in that great gospel work.
Most recently, Darrell served as Missions Pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church in
Longview, Texas. He loved the gospel and was passionate about world missions, preaching and ministering in churches across the United States and around the world.
Darrell is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Sandy Hartell Moore. He is also survived by six children: Jamon and Shawna Moore (Puyallup, WA), Darren and Crystal Moore (
Longview, TX), Jason and Tara Moore (
Longview, TX), Duston and Mindy Moore (Chicago, IL), Deanna and Jorge Dorantes (Wichita Falls, TX), and Janna and Abel Bautista (Hammond, IN). He leaves behind twenty grandchildren: Alayna, Evan, and Cameron Moore (children of Jamon and Shawna); Charlotte Moore (daughter of Darren and Crystal); J.R., Adelaide, Lydia, and Luella Moore (children of Jason and Tara); Alexis, Haylee, Hayden, and Tyler Moore (children of Duston and Mindy); Landon, Layla, Logan, and Lennox Dorantes (children of Deanna and Jorge); and Gabriel, Ava, Maya, and Alia Bautista (children of Janna and Abel). He is also survived by his sister, Lauri (Jerome) Bailey; his brother, David (Bonnie) Moore; and his mother-in-law, Betty Hartell, along with a host of extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Hunnewell Mosher, and his father, Albert Moore.
A funeral service honoring the life and legacy of Darrell Moore will be held at First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana. Burial will follow at Memory Lane Cemetery in
Crown Point, Indiana. Flowers are welcome. Memorial contributions may also be made to Fundamental Baptist Missions International.
Darrell's life verse from Scripture was Acts 26:18.
Acts 26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
After a lengthy season marked by health challenges, Darrell met his Lord and Saviour-the One he loved deeply and served faithfully-face to face in all His glory on July 3, 2025. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to First Baptist Church.
