David Cole Boyer passed away on July 6, 2025, in Bloomington Hospital from colorectal cancer. David was born on August 20,1960 in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Charles Boyer and Cynthia Ann Cole Boyer, and survived by his sisters--Kim Boyer of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Becky Underwood of Bloomington--and his children Maerose Adora Boyer and Noah Emmanuel Boyer, both of Portland, Oregon
In his teens David developed a passion for the fine arts, working in paint, pen, and ink. After he graduated from the Alternative Program of the State College (PA) High School David moved to San Francisco where he lived for most of the next 20 years. It was there he met and married Mary Sweeting and became stepfather to Solomon Sweeting; soon Noah and Maerose were born into the family. David worked at and then bought a small offset printing shop in downtown Oakland where he printed environmentally-responsible materials for area business, including the Sierra Club, the Oakland As, and the Golden State Warriors. He also designed and created t-shirt designs which sold in the thousands at the Haight-Ashbury T-Shirt store.
In 2000 David moved with Maerose to Bloomington and lived with his father until Robert's passing in 2010. David took a job with the Bloomington Bagel Company on Dunn St. and soon became a beloved member of the IU community, known as "Bagel Dave." He served up delicious bagels with side orders of genuine affection and intellectual inquiry. He managed the BBC shop on E. 3rd Street where many Jacobs School students grabbed an encouraging (very music-savvy) word along with their favorite bagel or muffin. Since the pandemic, David has been a fixture at the BBC location in the Shoppes on College Mall Road.
David was also embraced by the community of the Neal Marshal Black Culture Center of Indiana University, where he had a second job working with his beloved friend Tim Womack.
He read voraciously, studied omnivorously, philosophized eclectically. He could talk with almost anyone about almost anything; a man with a more generous spirit would be hard to find. He will be sorely missed.
A memorial is being planned for what would have been David's 65th birthday in Bloomington."
