David Eugene Lewis
"In life, we loved you dearly, in death we love you still. In our hearts you hold a special place, no one else can ever fill."
It is with much love and deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of David Eugene Lewis, age 76, of New Albany, OH, on Saturday, July 5, 2025.
No matter what name you called him - David, Dave, Dad, PaPa Lou, Coach, Spike, Don Louie, Shark, Brother, Uncle, Cousin, Friend, Classmate, Teacher, Athletic Director - or a combination of several of these titles - always remember him loving life with his blonde hair and big smile.
David was born on the west side of Columbus, Ohio. He is preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Gladys Lewis; and brother, Glenn "Butch" Lewis. He was a 1967 graduate of Franklin Heights High School. He earned his undergraduate degree from Capital University and advanced degrees from Xavier University, Ashland University, and The Ohio State University.
Dave's chosen profession was an educator, coach, and school administrator for 40 plus years. His teaching and athletic tenure in Central Ohio took him to Canal Winchester Schools, Bishop Ready High School, New Albany High School, Hamilton Township High School, and Reynoldsburg High School.
To follow his "deep love" for football he spent 16 years teaching and coaching at the collegiate level at St. Norbert College, Green Bay, WI; West Virginia Wesleyan College, Buckhannon, WV; University of Indianapolis, Indianapolis, IN; and Muskingum College, New Concord, OH. He also collegiately coached baseball, wrestling, track and field.
He was a wonderfully kind and loving husband to Gayle, his wife of 44 years, his two children, Celisa Finley (David) of Pataskala, Brent Lewis (Alyssa) of New Albany; and four grandchildren, Reece and Redick Lewis, and Aislinn and Emerson Finley.
Also survivors to mourn his loss include sister, Sheila Snyder, Marysville; sister-in-law, Kaye Lewis, Marysville; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Susan Brobst, Groveport; numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.
The family wishes to thank his wonderful nurses, Kelly Benjamin, Heidi Bowman and Emily Wilson. The family requests those who wish to express their sympathy in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in David's name to Capital City Hospice, 2800 Corporate Exchange Drive Suite 170, Columbus, OH 43231.
