David Petrik, age 67, of Ada, MN, passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at Vibra Hospital in Fargo, ND.
David John Petrik was born on 2-17-58 to Edward and Lucille (Oberbroekling) Petrik in Platte, South Dakota. He attended Bovee Country School and Geddes High School graduating in 1976. He attended Mitchell Vo-Tech where he studied construction. Throughout his life this was his passion. His talent is showcased in many areas where he lived at. He was quite proud of his home in Ada where he continued working on up to his recent surgery. He was a stickler for details and had a knack for making diamonds out of coal. He was passionate about saving others money. He went on to attend St. Mary's Seminary in Winona, MN eventually graduating with a degree in Communication and Philosophy. He lived briefly in Denver, Co where he married and had an infant son whom he lost in childbirth. He returned to Geddes and met his wife, Shelly in Lynch, NE at a retreat for widowed and Divorced Catholics. Together, they made their home in Geddes, SD; Clear Lake SD; and Ada, MN. Shortly after their marriage, he attended school in Denver Co, earning his Associates of Mortuary Science Degree. He was a funeral director for many years before returning to his love of carpentry. David and Shelly, or Helen as he often referred to her, shared a life of mountains and valleys. His greatest joy was raising 4 daughters and watching his grandchildren. David has a special bond with all of the girls with each having nicknames and special jingles he shared.
David was a devoted Catholic where he proudly held membership as a 3rd degree knight with the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed spending time with his beloved cat, Bob, who waited patiently from delivering his Amazon packages. David had a unique ability to see the positive in any situation and when stressed would often say "will this really matter in another year?" And most times, it didn't, though Shelly would hate to admit he was right – he often was. David was quick with a smile and enjoyed his chats with whomever he ran into. Though his physical heart eventually wore out, his kind, generous, loving heart will live on in the lives that he touched. He was steadfast in his love for others and the Lord. Rooted deeply in his Catholic faith he did not fear death and knew his greatest reward was in Heaven.
He is survived by his wife, Michelle (Shelly) Petrik, his daughters: Sarah (Joshua) Awender of Ada, MN; Victoria (Alexander) Sina of Fargo, ND; Elizabeth (Benjamin) Krueger of East Grand Forks, MN, and Katherine (Bryer) Merkens of Fargo, ND. He will be deeply missed by grandsons Jaxon and Cooper Awender and Seth Krueger. Sister Eileen (David) Carda of Geddes, SD; Brothers, James (Marilyn) Petrik, Geddes, SD; and Wayne (Sherry) Petrik Dell Rapids, SD and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son.
Visitation will be held Sunday, July, 6, 2025, from 2:00pm – 4:00pm, with a prayer service at 4:00pm, at St. Jospeh Catholic Church in Ada. A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, July 7, 2025, at 11:00am, with visitation continuing one hour prior, at St. Jospeh Catholic Church in Ada.
