“It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Derek “Doc” Sabedra, who died peacefully on July 3, 2025, at the age of 56. Derek left this world with grace and dignity, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to others.
Born on February 9, 1969, in Brooklyn, New York, Derek and his family later settled in Huntingtown, Maryland. A proud graduate of Calvert High School, Derek was a lifelong learner whose passion for education and psychology helped define his life’s purpose. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology from the University of Maryland, College Park, a Master’s Degree in Psychology from Bowie State University, and a Ph.D. from Capella University in Sport’s Psychology in 2015 an accomplishment that earned him his most cherished nickname, “Doc.”
Derek was a man of many talents and passions: a licensed clinical professional counselor for over 23 years, a decorated coach, an educator, an author, a singer, and a songwriter. He dedicated his life to helping others. Whether in the classroom, on the athletic field, or through both professional and personal counseling he guided children, teens, and adults through challenges with warmth, patience, and deep understanding.
He was incredibly proud of his accomplishments as a coach, counselor, and educational leader across several institutions. He served more than 20 years with the St. Mary’s County Public School system, including roles as a teacher, counselor, and coach. He also led the men’s and women’s tennis teams at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where he still holds coaching records. Derek later served as Assistant Principal at Dorchester High School and was named Supervisor of Athletics for Dorchester County Public Schools. Most recently, he had been appointed Principal of Saint Mary’s School of Piscataway in Clinton, Maryland; a role he was honored and excited to begin.
Derek was widely known as the “go-to” coach, counselor, and friend who was always ready with a motivational pep talk, a listening ear, or a thoughtful word of encouragement. To his students, athletes, and colleagues, he was a mentor and steady presence who brought out the best in those around him.
Outside of his many professional roles, Derek found joy in life’s simple and soulful pleasures. He had a deep love for 80s music, attending sporting events, playing and coaching tennis, and sipping on his beloved Cherry Coke. He was a passionate fan of the New York Yankees and the University of Maryland Terrapins and never missed an opportunity to cheer them on from the stands. Friends will forever remember his storytelling, offbeat sense of humor, and ability to turn even ordinary moments into something unforgettable.
Derek is survived by: Alex Truitt, and his wife Brianna. Steven Sabedra, and Steven’s children, Jordan and Alexander. Lynn Hoffman and her husband Joseph along with their children Lauren and Nicholas. Erik Carrasquillo and his wife, Wendy. Godson, Flynn Feeley. And a wide circle of friends and colleagues who loved Derek like family.
A Memorial Gathering will be held on Thursday, July 17th, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Lee Funeral Home in Owings, MD. A Memorial Mass will follow on Friday, July 18th, at 11:00 AM at Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church in North Beach, MD. All who knew Derek are welcome to attend and honor the incredible life of a man who gave so much to so many. In tribute to his love for the University of Maryland, guests are encouraged to wear Maryland colors or attire (appropriate for the occasion) to the services.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital https://fundraising.stjude.org/site/TR?px=8860516&fr_id=154020&pg=personal or to your local youth tennis programs, two causes that were especially close to Derek’s heart."
