"Donnie Gene Peck," better known as, Don Peck, was born on February 22, 1939, in Oklahoma City, OK to Vera and Eugene Peck. While living in Oklahoma City, Don's younger sister Velta was born. This started a lifelong inseparable bond between the two of them. The family later moved to Keyes, OK for a short period before settling in Guymon, OK, which Don felt was his true home. While attending Guymon High School, Don played both football and basketball, won the State Championship in basketball in 1957, and was also class Vice President. Continuing his education, he moved to Stillwater to attend Oklahoma State University, before joining the Army Reserves.
True to his entrepreneurial spirit Don and a friend opened, "The Cellar", a pizzeria in Guymon. A place known to many for its elaborate decorations and fun times. Don eventually moved back to Oklahoma City where he served his community as a Police Officer in Nichols Hills, becoming deeply appreciated by many for his commitment to public safety. It was during this time in his life while he was holding several different jobs, that he met his beloved wife, Dorothy, which he nicknamed Dee.
Don and Dee were married on August 5, 1972. Shortly after marriage he started working in a managerial position at Montgomery Ward, where he remained until he retired. Don's creative ingenuity was apparent in the house his wife and he designed and built together, in
Edmond, OK. They resided in that home for 48 years. Their children Neely and Barrett were born shortly after the house was finished. Don took immense pride in his children, and they raised their family in the home they created.
Outside of his professional career, Don was passionate about computers, electronics, and technology in general. He was utterly fascinated by the rapid advancement of the digital age and could often be found tinkering with the latest gadget or reading up on the newest tech developments. Don kept his finger on the pulse of current world events, the stock market, and could be found working the grill at family gatherings. Don also had a deep love for sports, particularly Thunder basketball and OU football, and rarely ever missed watching a game.
Above all, family was very precious to Don. He was a loving husband to his wife, Dee, a proud father to his daughter Neely (married to Daniel) and to his son Barrett (married to Tamra). Don reveled in the role of grandfather to Hudson, Presley, and Harley, sharing with them not just his interests but also the values of kindness and humor that he lived by leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
Don is also survived by his dear sister Velta Teeter (married to Glen), sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vera and Eugene Peck.
Don had a playful spirit, which was obvious when he interacted with his children and grandchildren. If you were lucky enough to get to know him well, you would most likely receive a nickname from him – they were always creative and endearing. His protective nature could almost be overbearing at times, but it was the way he showed his love to his family. A good hamburger or fillet mignon grilled to perfection would always bring a smile to Don's face. He had a way of coming up with inventions to solve everyday problems. If he had patented his creations, they would have brought in millions. Always the storyteller, Don easily spun a good tale. You never knew if it was completely true or slightly embellished for his audience. He could be a prankster and enjoyed playing a good trick on friends. Don Peck was truly one of a kind and will always be remembered for his unique legacy.
