Donelle Adair (Dompier) Heilman March 12, 1947 – July 8, 2025
"We cry because it's over. We smile because we had you. You packed a whole lot of living in- It ended way too soon." (Alan Cooper, Never Not Remember You)
Donelle Heilman passed away peacefully on July 8, 2025. Though Alzheimer's gradually took her away, her vibrant spirit, generous heart, deep faith, and legacy of love remain in the lives of those she touched.
At the center of Donelle's life was her 57-year marriage to her beloved husband, Mick Heilman. Their love was steadfast and enduring. Mick lovingly cared for her at home until it was no longer safe, then continued to visit daily following her transition to Lexington Pointe Memory Care in October 2024. His daily presence reflected a devotion that stood as a powerful model of commitment and unconditional love.
Together, Donelle and Mick raised four children: Christine (Jeff) Evans, Mike (Katy) Heilman, Tony (Laura) Heilman, and Betsy Zirbes (Kevin Hafermann) comfort and care in the most ordinary moments. Her unwavering support and presence in the lives of her children and grandchildren created lasting traditions and memories-always generous, always joyful.
Faith was the cornerstone of Donelle's life. Her deep relationship with God guided her words, actions, and purpose. Whether leading church groups, serving the community, or raising her family, Donelle's faith was ever-present and unwavering.
Born in New Rockford, North Dakota, Donelle graduated from St. James High School in 1965, where she was a spirited cheerleader, writer for the school paper, and active in student life. Her connection to her hometown and high school friendships remained strong throughout her life.
A Registered Nurse, Donelle began her career as Student Nurse of the Year and spent more than 40 years in nursing, most notably at Fairview Ridges Hospital in
Burnsville, Minnesota. She served as an OB nurse, supporting thousands of mothers and newborns with skill, kindness, and calm assurance. As a nurse educator, she advocated for breastfeeding, mentored young nurses, and helped new parents navigate life's most important transition. Donelle created Crib Sheets, the OB department's monthly newsletter, compiled hospital cookbooks, and organized countless service projects. Her friendships with colleagues at Fairview Ridges grew into a second family, many of whom remained by her side through life's joys and sorrows.
One of Donelle's greatest passions was participating in medical mission trips around the world. She traveled to Guatemala, Peru, Tanzania, the Dominican Republic, and beyond-offering her medical expertise, compassion, and care to communities with limited access to healthcare. These trips were sacred to her: a way to live out her faith through action, to serve those in need, and to connect with people across cultures. On several of these trips, Mick joined her, lending his construction skills while she cared for patients. Together, they embodied a shared commitment to service that touched lives across the globe.
Outside of work and service, Donelle radiated warmth, energy, and joy. An avid Minnesota Twins fan and lifelong Johnny Cash enthusiast, she embraced life's celebrations with enthusiasm. She created magical traditions for her grandchildren-hosting holiday-themed games, Race for the Cure walks (in celebration of her 30-year breast cancer survivorship), fishing trips, mission trips, marshmallow launcher competitions, and crafting sessions. Whether celebrating a birthday with toilet plunger hockey or organizing a seed-spitting contest on the Fourth of July, she brought laughter and light to every gathering.
Her spirit of hospitality extended beyond family. A dedicated community volunteer, Girl Scout leader, 4-H leader, and second mom to many neighborhood children, Donelle left a legacy of love and service. She nurtured meaningful friendships in every community she lived in and adored time with her beloved card club. Her contagious laughter was unforgettable and often recalled as one of her most beautiful gifts.
Donelle spent her final eight months at Lexington Pointe Memory Care in Eagan, where she received compassionate and dignified care. In her final days, the family was deeply supported by Brighton Hospice, whose presence brought comfort and peace.
She was preceded in death by her parents and other cherished loved ones now welcoming her home.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, July 31, 2025 at White Funeral Home in Apple Valley, 14560 Pennock Ave.,
Apple Valley, MN 55124 with a visitation starting at 9:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Friends of Chimbote Medical Mission or New Rockford Women's Auxiliary Cemetery Association.
Donelle lived with faith, served with love, and gave her whole heart to everything she did. Her story was one of laughter, generosity, strength, and grace. She packed a whole lot of living in. She will never, not ever, be forgotten and her legacy will live on.
