Donna Kay Close (Faber) was born on March 21, 1950, to Percy and Gertrude Faber of Ocheyedan Iowa. The family farmed in the Ocheyedan/Sibley, IA area and Donna attended school in Sibley, where she graduated from High School in 1968. Donna was very close to both her mother and her father and loved them deeply. In fact, despite his passing at an early age, one could almost know Donna's father by the stories she would tell of him and the love that she clearly held for him even decades after his death. Her father's death was a seminal moment for Donna – so much so that her son, despite being a very young age at the time, vividly remembers her discussing its impact on her when she gave her testimony of her faith in Jesus Christ at the De Smet Christian and Missionary Alliance Church decades ago. Likewise, Donna maintained a very close and caring relationship with her mother Gertrude, whom she adored (and later cared for) until Gertrude's death in 2002.
In January 1974, Donna married Richard Close of De Smet, SD. After their wedding the couple lived in De Smet and enjoyed 51 happy years of marriage together. Along the way, two children (David and Susan) were born. Donna and Richard made a great team, and Donna worked hard to raise her children and help Richard with the family business. In addition to her work, Donna enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, canning, reading, cooking delicious meals, and baking delicious treats. Donna's family is in debt to her and thankful for the many delicious recipes she left to us. Donna also loved to laugh, and we hold many fond memories of hilarious exchanges and events where tears of laughter were shed.
Donna gave much of herself to those she loved, providing love, care, support, and her time to many family members who were ill or in need during her life, even while she suffered with many very difficult physical ailments herself. She loved sacrificially – and did so repeatedly. Donna was also an incredibly proud grandmother who beamed when her grandchildren succeeded and was quick to tell others of their accomplishments. She cared for all of them greatly and prayed for each and every one of them regularly.
Those who knew Donna will remember her wonderful sense of humor, her playfulness and teasing, her selflessness, and her perseverance. She was a dear wife, mother, and grandmother who will be missed immensely.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived and will be missed by her husband Richard, her son David (Genevieve), daughter Susan, and six grandchildren: Sierra, Cassidy, Andrew, David Jr., Evelyn, and Katherine.
