It is with great sadness and profound gratitude that we announce the passing of Dorothy Reese Thoma, born on May 29, 1929, and who departed this world on June 23, 2025. Dorothy was predeceased by her son Timothy Keel West. She is survived by three sons, David (Bea) West of Florida, Richard (Angie) West of Tennessee, and Ron (Sandy) West of Marshall, NC. Dorothy was predeceased by her granddaughter, Melissa West. She is survived by three grandchildren, Heather Hicks, Dustin West, and Patrick West. She leaves one great grandson, Blake Hicks. Dorothy also leaves behind many family members and friends who brought her great joy.

Dorothy was the epitome of a true Appalachian woman, a beacon of strength, love, and unwavering resolve. Dorothy's journey began in the rolling hills of Madison County, where she nurtured her deep respect for the land and her community. Despite the challenges of her early years, she made brave sacrifices in pursuit of a quality education, embodying the spirit of resilience that defined her life. Her thirst for knowledge led her to travel to many countries, where she absorbed other cultures and perspectives, always returning with stories that enriched the lives of those around her.

An avid reader, Dorothy's love for literature fueled her curiosity and served as a bridge connecting her to the world beyond the mountains she called home. She had a remarkable sense of humor that could lighten even the heaviest heart, often sharing laughter with family and friends.

Above all, Dorothy was a devoted mother, loving her sons unconditionally. She was the strong family matriarch, guiding her family through triumphs and trials, instilling values of kindness, perseverance, and respect. Her love for Madison County was profound; she cherished its beauty and traditions, ensuring her family embraced the principles of hard work and community.

As we mourn her loss, we celebrate the radiant life of Dorothy Reese Thoma. She leaves behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and an enduring spirit that will forever inspire all who were fortunate to know her. Her memory will live on through her family and the countless lives she touched throughout her extraordinary life.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
