Douglas Lee Houck, born on July 6, 1942, in Highland Park, Michigan, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2025, just shy of his 83rd birthday. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy of courage, love, and a life lived boldly on his own terms.
Doug is survived by his cherished wife, Mary Houck, the cornerstone of his life and his greatest accomplishment. He is also survived by his brother, Fred Houck; his son, Ryan (Vanessa) and Aaron (Brook); his grandchildren: Wyatt (Victoria), McKenna Doyle (Brian), Jackson, Madison, Drake and Boden; and his great-grandchildren: Weston and Kinley Doyle.
A proud Vietnam veteran, Doug served with the Green Hornets, earning the call sign "Albatross." His bravery and service were honored with multiple awards, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals, reflecting his unwavering dedication and valor.
Known as "Horrible Houck" on the basketball court, Doug was a fierce competitor and a threat on the tennis court. His athletic prowess was matched by his entrepreneurial spirit. As a serial entrepreneur, he tackled every venture with passion and tenacity. Doug's love for travel took him across the globe, often by boat or sail, where he found freedom on the water. An avid reader, he could frequently be found on his porch, immersed in a book for hours, feeding his curious mind.
Doug's family roots are in Mullens, West Virginia and his heritage shaped the man he became. He was adventurous and never passed up a challenge. In many ways, Doug lived the life we all aspire to-fearlessly, authentically, and entirely his way.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Wednesday, July 16th at 9 am at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.
