Douglas M. Terry was born in Riverhead, Ll, New York on August 15, 1938. He was the son of Richard C. and Sara B. Hill Terry of Aquebogue. He moved to Florida in 1995 after living in NH for 30 years.

He leaves his wife Betty L. Terry of Holmes Beach, FL; children Scott D. Terry of NY, Bonnie A. Makkinje of Bradenton, FL and Leisha C McQueeney of Pembroke, NH as well as his brothers; Frederick Hill Terry of Baiting Hollow , NY, Richard Dwight Terry of Bradenton, FL and a sister Jean B. Cunnningham of Wappinger Falls, NY. He was predeceased by his younger brother David L Terry and his sister Alliene B Erickson. He is also survived by a stepson Ted Zehnder of Ohio; sisters in-law; Angie Blunt of Florida, Glenna Thompson and Audrey Gear of Ohio. Douglas and his wife enjoy 11 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

He traces his roots back to Long Sutton, the county of Hampshire, England, where Richard Terry settled in 1480. In 1635, the three brothers came over to MA on the ship called James. They later moved to Long Island, NY, between 1640 & 1650. These pioneers were active in the settling of Southold, Ll, one of the earliest settlements in the country.

His great grandfather, Decon Danial Terry and others fought the British to keep America free and later his great grandfather, Columbus F. Terry left his farm and young Irish wife; Theressa, to fight for three years in the Civil War with the fifth Heavy Artillery NY. He fought against his wife’s sisters’ husbands. The sisters migrated to Richmond, VA and married there. Mr. Terry’s grandfather, Richard Terry Sr. and Edna Hallock ran the family farm in Baiting Hollow, NY until his death in 1914.

Mr. Terry enjoyed a long career in Real Estate Investments in New Hampshire and as a realtor was elected to the President of Realtors Land Institute of NH. He was chairman of the State Realtor Marketing Committee and was a 50-year member of the National Board of Realtors. He formed several real estate companies and specialized in Land and Property Sales. His companies included Terrys’ Real Estate, Terry Brothers, Terry East and Earth Resources Corporation. Mr. Terry received a license as an NH and NY State residential real estate appraiser.

He was a Veteran serving in the US Navy in Japan and later in Hawaii where he specialized in Communications. In 1978 he graduated from the University of New Hampshire.

Mr. Terry enjoyed photography as a hobby and was active in sports throughout his senior years, enjoying tennis, swimming and becoming proficient as a Black Belt in several forms of Martial Arts. In the seventies and eighties, he owned the Karate Institute in Concord, NH. His senior years included much boating and fishing on the Florida waterways.
