Dougles Riley Payne, age 58, of Chatsworth, passed away peacefully at Hospice of Chattanooga on July 1, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born March 18, 1967, in Dalton, GA, Doug was a beacon of humility and kindness throughout his life. He had an infectious smile, and he always made everyone feel welcome and appreciated.
Doug devoted nearly 14 years to Cimbar Performance Minerals, where he began his career at the entry level and rose to become the Quality Control lab Supervisor. He took pride in conducting safety training for new employees each month, and he cherished the friendships he developed there.
A man of faith, Doug was a member of City View Church of God. His spiritual community was a cornerstone of his life, providing strength and solace during his illness.
An avid outdoorsman, Doug's passion for whitewater kayaking and camping allowed him to enjoy nature's challenges and tranquility. These activities reflected his adventurous spirit and love for the great outdoors. He cherished the friendships he made in the kayaking community, and the last years of his life were the best years of his life because of all the friends he made.
Doug's legacy of love and loyalty is carried on by his family including his beloved wife, Charlene Payne; children, Tasha Payne (Brandon) and Kassie Payne Edwards (Nick); brothers, Steve Ware, Ray Payne, and Robert Kilgore: his cherished grandchildren, Riley, Khloe, Evan, and Silas. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.
Doug was preceded in death by his mother, Lola Mae Huggins Kilgore; his father, John Payne; his brother, Johnny Payne; and his sister, Debra Payne Ellis.
A service to celebrate Doug's life will be held at City View Church of God on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 4:00 p.m.The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with Rev. Steve Ware and Rev. David Mathis officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to help cover his final expenses.
Doug's life was marked by his unwavering support and encouragement to all who knew him. His legacy will continue to inspire those he has left behind, and he will be greatly missed.

I will never forget the first time I met Doug. I went to visit Charlene, when I knocked on the door a man whom I had never seen before opened the door. I was caught by surprise so I quickly said "who are you?" To which the man said "not Doug!" Come to find out he was indeed Doug. So I've called him "Not Doug" since I met him years ago.
