Earl A. Samson passed away on January 14th, 2025, at the age of 91, after a brief illness. He is survived by his children, Trip(Allyson), Ed (Diana), Annie, and Rob (Heidi). Sharing in the loss are Earl's nine grandchildren, great-granddaughter, and two sisters (Barbara and Debbie). He now joins his loving wife of 48 years, Susan Brown Samson, who predeceased him in 2020.
A devoted father, husband, grandfather and brother, Earl was the ever-loving family patriarch, a giving member of the community, and a constant role model of gentle kindness and strong principles.
Born on September 25th, 1933, to Earl (Sr) and Helen (Rowe) in Waterbury Connecticut, Earl spent most of his early years in Cheshire Connecticut. He graduated from Middlebury Collegein 1955, where he met Anne Stringer, the mother of his four children. He later got a law degree from the New York University School of Law.
Earl was in the investment world in New York City for 30 years. He spent 15 years of his early career at U.S. Trust Company and the later years as an entrepreneur, first as a founder of Samson Monier Associates and later, as a co-founder and partner in Landmark Management, Inc. In the latter half of these years, he found and married his love, Susan, where together they embraced city life, culture, friends, and entrepreneurship.
Earl and Susan found Little Compton, RI in the summer of 1975. While it was initially a place to spend their summers, they developed a love for the town and the people that live there. In 1987 they shed their city life and moved to Little Compton to become the new owners of Sakonnet Vineyards, which they owned and managed for twenty-five years.
Together, Earl and Susan were long-standing congregants at St. Andrews By-The-Sea, each assuming active leadership roles in transforming the church from its previous summer location on Sakonnet Point Road to a year-round congregation in the Commons, at which he rarely missed a Sunday service. They were also active members of the Sakonnet Point Club, Sakonnet Golf Club, Warren's Point Beach Club, and former members of the Union Club (NYC), and New York Yacht Club.
His sweet smile and strong presence will be sorely missed by his family and friends all over the world. A service will be held on February 1st at 10:30am at St. Andrews By-The-Sea, 182 Willow Avenue, Little Compton, RI. Gifts in honor of Earl's memory would be greatly accepted at any of the following organizations: Little Compton Community Center, Stay AtHome in Little Compton or Friends of Little Compton Wellness Center.
