He was born in Starnes Cove, Buncombe County, North Carolina to Dewitt and Pauline Miller on September 7, 1934 graduating from Sand Hill High School in 1952. He graduated from Valparaiso Technical Institute in 1954 with an AD in Electronic Engineering and later graduated with honors from McMurry College in 1980 with a BA in Business Management.
Edward entered the Air Force Aviation Cadet Program in February 1955 and was designated a distinguished graduate, receiving his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant and his rating as Navigator in 1956. His first assignments took him all over Europe and North Africa. His stateside assignments were various but mainly at Dyess AFB, Texas, and Westover AFB, Massachusetts. His primary aircraft were the B47 and the B52. He had 257 combat missions over Vietnam in B52s as a Radar Navigator/Bombardier, flying out of Guam and U-Tapao, Thailand. After his retirement from the Air Force in 1982, he worked as an administrator at Stenograph Institute of Texas, a court reporting school located in Abilene, Texas, for 14 years and loved his association with the students there. He delivered Meals on Wheels for 18 years and was on the Board of Directors of Abilene Adult Daycare for nine years. Edward was also an assistant Boy Scout troop leader with BSA Troop 272 out of Aldersgate Methodist Church and volunteered as a tax preparer with the AARP Tax Aide program for 10 years. He was active in Rotary as a board member, Treasurer, and Sergeant at Arms.
He married Shirley Palmisano in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1968. He had three children, Michael Miller, Diana Miller, and Michael Furze. He was preceded in death by his father, Dewitt Miller; his mother, Pauline Miller; his brother, Daniel Miller; his wife, Shirley Miller; and his very special friend, Susie Ray. He is survived by his son, Michael Miller, of Houston, Texas, and three wonderful grandkids, Hannah, Sarah, and Steven; his daughter, Diana Setser, her husband, Doug, and two wonderful grandkids, Frederick and Anna, all of Arrington, Tennessee; and his son, Michael Furze of Hertforsdshire, England.
His only regrets were that he did not get to spend as much time with his grandkids as he would have liked. He adored them all.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Lyndale Abilene Senior Living, Mesa Springs Healthcare Center, and Hendrick Hospice for their excellent and compassionate care.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Meals on Wheels, PO Box 903, Abilene TX 79604, and St. Jude’s Children's Hospital.
