Elaine Joyce (Gottschalk) Grimes passed away at her home on November 6, 2024, following a short illness. She was 93 years old.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at Congregational United Church of Christ, 209 W Broadway St. Decorah, IA 52101. Burial will be at Phelps Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at Helms Funeral home, Decorah, IA. There will be a 1-hour visit prior to the service Thursday.
Elaine was born November 7, 1930, in Elkader, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Leona (Gusta) Gottschalk. She married Jackie (Jack) Grimes on November 18, 1956, at Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church in Elkader, Iowa.
Elaine graduated from Elkader High School, completed her teaching certificate at Upper Iowa College, and achieved her BA at Luther College. Elaine taught for 8 years in the West Union School District and 24 years for the Decorah School District. During her life, Elaine enjoyed golfing, gardening, puzzles, playing bridge in multiple groups, bowling, genealogy, and traveling. She was an active member of Decorah Congregational UCC women's groups, the Retired School Personnel Association Decorah Chapter, a Vesterheim volunteer, Clayton and Winneshiek County Genealogy Societies, and Women's Hospital Auxiliary.
Elaine is survived by her four children: Jan Grimes of Oelwein, Lynn (Bruce) Tiemann and Julie Grimes of Marion and Lee (Sharon) Grimes of Omaha; 6 grandchildren: Ben (Fabienne) Tiemann, Andrew (Kathryn) Tiemann, Ryan Grimes, Meghan Grimes (Alex), Madeline Grimes and Aaron Grimes; and 4 great-grandchildren: Caitlin, Sophia, Liam and Finn Tiemann and sister-in-law Sara (Don) Gottschalk.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Elmer and Leona Gottschalk, husband: Jackie Grimes, in-laws: Jesse and Muriel Grimes, her brothers: Don and Glen Gottschalk, and sister-in-law: Deborah (Glen) Gottschalk.
The family requests that memorials be designated to the Decorah Congregational UCC building fund or Winn Med Hospice.
