Elinor Roach Helms Obituary
After a long battle with dementia, Elinor transitioned from her earthly home to her heavenly home and into the arms of Jesus and many precious loved ones awaiting her on Saturday, May 10, 2025. Born in York County, SC, on November 19, 1938 to Oliver Johnston and Bessie Lemon Roach. Nadine, as she was known to her friends, or Nick as she was known to her family, married the love of her life, John Reid (Buster) Helms at the very young age of 16. Nadine was a mother of 6 children, grandmother to 15 grandchildren, and has countless great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
A homemaker for most of her adult life, Nadine loved her family fiercely. She was a wonderful cook and could make a delicious meal out of seemingly nothing. She had a beautiful voice and could be found singing around the house all the time and often in church, or anywhere she happened to be. Her most important job was to love her family and to teach anyone who would listen all about Jesus.
Nadine was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, 7 siblings, a daughter, Deborah Lynn Harvey, a son, Ronald Reid Helms, and 2 grandsons, Aaron Harvey and Jeremy Helms, and 3 great grandchildren. Nadine is survived by her children, Rev. Bobby (Janet) Helms of Monroe; Kenny (April) Helms of Indian Trail; Teresa (Tim) Helms of Monroe; Johnny (Karen) Helms of Monroe; daughter-in-law, Kathie Helms; brothers, Ray Roach of Lenoir City, Tennessee; Stanley (Marcine) Roach of Myrtle Beach, SC; many grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She is also remembered by her many friends at White Oak Manor of Waxhaw, especially her roommate Mrs. Wilma Powell.
The family would like to thank the staff at White Oak Manor for the kindness, care, love, and support they have given to our mother and our entire family member in the past weeks.
A graveside service will be held at the Indian Trail Cemetery on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at 11:00 am.
