Elizabeth Ross Berg, affectionately known as Betsy to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, in her hometown of Detroit, Michigan. Born on February 16, 1936, also in Detroit, Betsy was a beacon of love and resilience throughout her 89 years of life.
Betsy's early education at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Detroit laid the foundation for her lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth. She furthered her education at Trinity College in Washington DC, where she honed her intellect and compassionate worldview. Betsy loved her career as a teacher, where her enthusiasm for learning left an indelible mark on the students she taught at Dominican High School and St. Paul Catholic School.
The matriarch of her family, Betsy was predeceased by her beloved first husband, Emil Berg, her beloved son, John (Patricia) and her sister Sara Scholl. She found love again and is survived by her devoted husband, John Jachman, who stood by her side, sharing in her joys and sorrows with unwavering support. She was a loving mother to Paul and his wife, Susan, and to James and his husband, Jeffrey. She cherished her role as a grandmother to Lindsey (Darren), Michael (Eva), Molly (James), Ross, Ryan (Ellie), William (Audrey) and great-grandmother to Daniel and George. Betsy also treasured the friendship of John's children, Matthew (Beth), Jennifer, Thomas, David (Jeannie) and Rebecca (Michael) and grandchildren Ruie, Zane, Sophia, Luke, Diana, Scarlett, Julian, Evelyn, and Frances. Her nieces and nephews, Lisa Scholl, Richard (Altina) Scholl, and Stefan (Kim) Scholl, will fondly remember their Aunt Betsy's kindness and sage advice.
As we bid farewell to Betsy, we reflect on a life well-lived, a journey marked by love, faith and an unyielding dedication to family, taking pride in their accomplishments and celebrating every milestone with enthusiasm. Her presence will be profoundly missed, but the impact of her life will continue to resonate with all who had the privilege of knowing her. She possessed an uncanny ability to uplift others, regardless of her own struggles. Her warm smile and generous spirit were infectious, and she was often the person others turned to for comfort and guidance. Betsy's life is not one to be mourned, but rather celebrated-a testament to the power of love and the human spirit.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, July 8th, 4-8pm at Chas. Verheyden, Inc., 16300 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Park. Funeral Wednesday, July 9th; Instate 9:30am until time of Mass, 10:00am, at St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church, 157 Lake Shore Rd., Grosse Pointe Farms.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Detroit Public Television.
