Born and raised in Mason City, Iowa, Elwood "Butch" was the youngest of 8 children born to Alice(Gabriel) and Scottie Miller. His older brother brought the family to El Cajon, California, when he was in the 10th grade. Butch attended El Cajon Valley High School where he was recognized as an up and coming writing talent, even securing the notice of Walt Disney who offered him a job in the corporate offices, which he turned down to pursue his own writing. He attended San Diego City College and San Diego State where he and his brothers opened a coffee shop called Circe's Cup, an original "beatnik" hang out adjacent to the college. Butch had varied interests and topical expertise, and was an accomplished scholar and writer on multiple projects. His most successful book was titled "Passion For Murder" where he was the first to challenge Sigmund Freud's theories based on exhaustive research and asserted that Dr. Freud killed a family member. He collaborated with another artist to write a musical rock opera based on the life of the Egyptian King "Ahknaton " Other projects focused on the works and life of Shakespeare and wrote several plays about him writing under the name "Eric Miller" as he was also known. His greatest talent however, was poetry and he wrote numerous books of poetry throughout his life. Butch was able to travel to and live in China and Taiwan, were he studied ancient Chinese culture and learned to speak Chinese while teaching English to Chinese children. He was also a student of the teachings of Einstein and Immanuel Velikovsky, befriending both Velikovsky and his wife. Butch ulitized his writing skills vocationally in the resume and due diligence industries. He was a kind and sensitive man to everyone who knew him and would give his shirt off his back to anyone who asked. He is predeceased by his mother Alice (Gabriel) Miller, his siblings James, Donald, Dolly, Scott, Richard, Joyce and Marie. He is survived by his two daughters Rhonda (Michael) Mallory and Carrie Brandt, his 5 grandchildren whom he loved dearly: Derrick (Carmen), Jordann and Tiffany Brandt; Brooke and Daniel Mallory and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He was very loved and will be missed by all whom loved him.
His family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Vibrant Living Care home and Lightbridge Hospice for the amazing care and compassion they extended to him in his final years. The family is also asking for no donations or flowers but to do an act of kindness in his honor.
