Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-grandmother, Great-great-grandmother, and Beloved Matriarch

With hearts full of sorrow and deep gratitude, we share the passing of our beloved Ermelinda (Eme) Montoya, who departed this world on July 18, 2025, surrounded by the love she so generously gave throughout her life. A true matriarch, Eme was the heartbeat of the Montoya family — a woman of strength, sass, grace, and unshakable devotion to those she loved.

Born on August 4, 1938, to Jose Velasquez and Elena Maclovia Sisneros, Ermelinda (Eme) was a woman of deep faith, strong values, and an infectious spirit. She poured her heart into everything she did, especially when it came to her family. She was the cherished wife of Gilbert Montoya, her loving partner in life and laughter. Throughout her life, Eme held dearly the memory of her beloved infant son, Steven Montoya, whose brief time on this earth left an everlasting imprint on her heart. She faced the sorrow of loss with grace, having been preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Elena, and five of her dear siblings: Cordie, Pablo, Faye, Pepa, and Alice. Their memories remained alive in her stories, and she cherished the bond they shared. She is survived by her loving husband Gilbert R. Montoya and their children: Ralph Montoya (Lisa†), Gene Montoya, Enedina (Eny) Christensen (Michael†), and Elaine Hansen (Casey), each of whom brought her immense pride, joy, and purpose. She also carried in her heart the memory of her cherished daughter-in-law Lisa and son-in-law Michael, who preceded her in death. Eme's legacy lives on through her fifteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren, with the joyous anticipation of two more great-great-grandchildren on the way. Her siblings also survive her: Lula, Lily, Ester, Rosie, Joann, Linda, Patsy, Joe, and Paul, who hold her memory close as they navigate this profound loss together. Eme's life was a beautiful tapestry of love, resilience, and connection; her spirit will continue to guide and inspire all who knew her.

Eme's home was more than four walls — it was a sanctuary of love, joy, and shared memories. Whether you stopped by for a quick hello or an extended visit, you never left hungry — or without an offer to stay the night. She and Gilbert had a gift for hospitality, often tag-teaming with a smile and a blowup mattress to ensure no one had to leave too soon. And when it came time to say goodbye, it was never quick — long chats by the door, one more hug, and maybe another story or two. Her love had no time limit. Their house served as a home to many of us children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Eme's sense of humor was as sharp as her cooking was legendary. She loved her family fiercely and never missed a chance to sneak in life lessons — like buying toy vacuums and brooms for her grandchildren, cleverly mixing fun with chores. Her playful reminders about cleaning the baseboards became part of the family's folklore, just one of many little ways she passed down her wisdom wrapped in love and laughter.

She was spicy, spirited, and never afraid to say what was on her mind, but she led with love and always had an excellent delivery. Her embrace offered warmth like no other, and her kitchen was where stories were told, memories were made, and generations grew closer. She was the soul of the home, the keeper of tradition, the comfort in hard times, and the joy in celebrations. Her presence filled every room, and her absence will be felt just as deeply.

Though we struggle to say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing her love continues to live in each of us. This is not the end — just a gentle "see you later" until we meet again.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Tiara Medina and Nicquel Christensen Eagar for their loving care and devotion to their great-grandmother over the past five months. Your presence brought comfort, dignity, and warmth to her final days. A special thank you to Alexandria, Ermelinda's beloved companion — your friendship and gentle presence meant the world to her. We want to express our profound gratitude to AMG Senior Care and Inspiration Hospice and Home Health for their unwavering support during this challenging time. Your kindness and guidance have made a profound difference. We will never forget you.
