Ernest R. Batchelder, 84, of Groton, VT, passed away peacefully with family by his side at his home on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. He was born to Beatrice M. (Hackett) and Harold E. Batchelder on May 14, 1941, in Burke Hollow, VT. He met and married Deloris (Stocker) Batchelder on June 15, 1974.
As a teenager, he worked at J.C. McLaren Farm in Barnet, VT, and Elmer Page Farm in Groton, VT. He also worked for himself in the woods prior to being drafted into the Army in 1967. Once he returned home, he became employed in the Vermont granite industry and retired from the Rock of Ages in 2006.
In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding ATVs, and snowmobiles. Throughout his life, he enjoyed planting and maintaining his vegetable gardens and started to grow his very own apple orchard.
After his retirement, he took up the hobby of sugaring and enjoyed making Vermont maple syrup.
He was predeceased by his wife of 28 years, Deloris (Stocker) Batchelder, on October 28, 2002; a grandson, Alexander Batchelder, on January 9, 2007; three brothers, Earl Hackett, Everett Batchelder, and Eston Batchelder; and two sisters, Lottie Winchester and Laura Giroux.
He is survived by three sons, Trevor H. Batchelder of Groton, VT, Quincy T. Batchelder of Groton, VT, and Steven M. Batchelder of Groton, VT; two grandsons, Andrew and Garrett Batchelder; a sister, Dorine White, and lots of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Ernie's name to Caledonia Home Health, 161 Sherman Drive, St. Johnsbury, Vermont 05819.
There will be a graveside service at Groton Village Cemetery on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 1 PM.
