EUGENE WELLS "Duck" DANNER, age 77, of York, Alabama, was born May 4, 1947 to the blessed union of the late Eugene and Essie Mae (Ethel) Williams Wells, Sr. He peacefully transitioned surrounded by loving family on January 28, 2025 at Sumter Health and Rehabilitation, York, Alabama. Service of Remembrance and Life Celebration to honor the life of Mr. Danner will be held Saturday, February 8, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Pine Grove Baptist Church, 3326 Walton Road 6, Yantley, Alabama. He will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time. Rev. Willie D. Burton is church pastor with Minister Edmond Bell (Pastor, New Shiloh Zion Baptist Church, Boyd, AL) as the officiating minister delivering the eulogy, offering words of comfort and consolation. Sister Tommie Taylor will serve as Mistress of Order. Interment follows in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends is scheduled Friday evening (Feb. 7th) from 2-5:00 p.m. in the Weatherly Chapel. On Saturday morning at 10:20 am the processional leaves the Danner residence, located 107 Homewood Circle.
Eugene's aunt and uncle John and Mary McCallum raised him from a child. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Shiloh Zion Baptist Church, Boyd, Alabama and remained a faithful member until his illness. Gene was the bass guitarist for the choir and praise team at Shiloh Zion for many years. He was educated in the Sumter County, Alabama school system. He worked at numerous places with his last employment being the University of West Alabama, Livingston, Alabama until his retirement. Gene wrote a number of gospel songs for other people and played for many of the gospel groups and churches in the local area.
Those left to cherish his memories are: a devoted wife, Elnora Danner of York, AL., one son Eugene Danner, Jr. Atlanta, GA., three daughters, Barbara Danner Bryant, Tuscaloosa, AL., Angela Danner Johnson, York, AL., and Terressa Danner Johnson of Meridian, MS; stepchildren, Thomas James (Margaret) Chaney of Lisman, AL., James Watson of Cuba, AL., and Michelle (Willie) Edwards of Tuscaloosa, A., one sister, Barbara Wells Bonner of Tuscaloosa, AL; twenty (20) grandchildren; twelve (12) great-grandchildren; and a numerous host of family, friends and others who love him dearly.
