Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle peacefully entered into eternal life at the age of 93. He was born at home on the farm in Hubbardston, on January 29, 1932, the son of Joseph and Marie (Datema) Schafer. Gene grew up in a faith filled, close knit family and graduated from St. John the Baptist School in 1949. He was drafted into the Army to serve for 2 years at Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska. During his time in the service, he wrote letters back and forth to the love of his life, Mary Priscilla Fox. They were married on August 16, 1958, and went on to raise seven children. Together they shared 66 wonderful years of marriage filled with love and devotion.
Gene returned from the service to dedicate his life to his passion as a farmer. He was the embodiment of neighborly, always willing to lend a hand and work on projects. He was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by sister, Anne Marie, brothers, Francis, Pete, Bernard, William, and John. Gene is survived by his beloved wife Mary Priscilla, sister, Virginia (Rita) Schafer, his children, Mindy Schafer- Hills, Mike (Julie) Schafer, Kathy (Andrew) Duma, Colleen (Daniel) Sheaffer, Todd, Tony (Debbie) and Thom (Heather) Schafer.
