"To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." Ecclesiastes 3:1

Evelyn Audrey Barnes was born on October 5, 1927 to the late Anita and Theodore Barnes in Biloxi, MS. Her life here on earth ended on July 21, 2025 in Gulfport, MS surrounded by loved ones.

Evelyn received her early education at A.E. Perkins and Nichols schools and later graduated from M.F. Nichols High School. After graduation, she married Henry Smith, and together they reared four children: Sylvia, Alan, Michael, and Gary.

She united with Bethel Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor E.H. Potter and remained a devoted member for over 60 years, making her the church's oldest member. Evelyn faithfully served in various ministries, including the Angelic Choir, the Hospitality Committee, and both the Junior and Senior Missions. Her commitment to the Seniot Mission continned until her health began to decline.

In her spare time, Evelyn found joy in playing the piano. She often held her own private praise and worship services at home, filling the house with beloved hymns and her melodic voice. Her music was a source of comfort and inspiration, echoing her deep faith and love for the Lord.

For over 40 years, Evelyn called Main Street in Biloxi her home, where she built lasting memories with her tamily and community. She was widely known for her exceptional cooking, with her homemade gumbo being a favorite among family and friends. Her greatest joy came from her children and grandchildren, who gave her life meaning and purpose.

Evelyn worked for many years as a domestic worker before ioining the billeting department at Keesler Air Force Base at the age of 40. After 22 years of dedicated service, she retired and embraced life with grace and gratitude.

In retirement, Evelyn became a world traveler. She cruised to destinations such as Mexico and Hawaii, to name a few. She spent several extended stays in Indiana, living with her daughter, Sylvia, and cherished the time spent together.
