Evelyn Ivaliotis ObituaryEvelyn Ivaliotis, 79 of Howell, NJ, passed away peacefully during the early morning hours on Friday, June 27, 2025, surrounded by her family.
Born October 14, 1945, in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan. Evelyn was the daughter of the late Sotirios Mariolis and Mary Mariolis Vretakos. At the age of three, Evelyn lost her father to heart disease. Several years later her mother married Charles Vretakos who raised Evelyn as his own daughter and later became an endearing grandfather to her own children, whom they referred to as "little Papou". Evelyn, Mary, and Charles grew very close as a family and later welcomed Evelyn's younger brother George on July 27, 1956.
In true Greek tradition, Evelyn met her husband John Ivaliotis through their parents. They soon came to recognize each other as true soulmates, marrying on July 3, 1966, and maintaining their enduring, lifelong bond for 59 years. They later welcomed their daughter Christine Ivaliotis on March 19, 1969, and their son Jason Paul Ivaliotis on April 26, 1981. Evelyn and John would endure many tumultuous times during their lives together, including the loss of their infant son Terrence. But their loving bond, resilient strength, and commitment to each other and their family was steadfast.
After starting their family in New York City, Evelyn and John moved to Ocean Township, NJ where they raised their two children and lived for 28 years. Evelyn was a homemaker for many years and enjoyed being surrounded by those she loved most. She was heavily invested in her children's education and was always a strong motivational force in their lives. While raising her own children, Evelyn worked as a nanny for several years. Her kind heart and magnetic personality enabled her to become an endearing and influential figure in the lives of the children she cared for.
Evelyn loved being around people and always saw the best in everyone. She made friends wherever she went and was quick with a kind word or to offer comfort and support. Strangers would frequently share their entire life story within minutes of meeting her. She strived to make everyone she loved feel happy, comfortable, welcomed and supported. In her free time at home Evelyn could be found dancing to the top 40 on the radio while cooking and baking. Music brought her joy. She was a frequent concert goer in her early adult years and often referred fondly to childhood memories of watching American Bandstand.
Evelyn is survived by her beloved husband John, her children Christine and Jason, his wife Sarah, and her three grandchildren Helen, Charles and Lillian. She is also survived by her many extended family members, including her cousins, nieces and their families. Evelyn is predeceased by her brother George Vretakos and her infant son Terrence Ivaliotis.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00AM on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1033 West Park Avenue, Ocean, NJ 07712 with a funeral service to follow at 11:00AM. Interment will follow at St. George Greek Orthodox Cemetery 2380 West Bangs Avenue, Neptune, NJ 07753. For condolences please visit www.fiorefuneralhomes.com.
