Evelyn (VanderTuin) Niewenhuis was born on November 21, 1931 to Bonne and Rickie (Feenstra) VanderTuin in rural Douglas County, SD. She attended a one room country school for four years and graduated 8th grade from New Holland Christian School. She found the love of her life at community church youth group events and was united in marriage to Gene Niewenhuis December 28,1950 at the Christian Reformed Church in New Holland, SD.
Evelyn was multi-talented, helping out in many ways on the family dairy farm. Along with keeping a busy family organized, she enjoyed sewing, gardening, canning and most of all visiting grandkids. She worked for 10 years as a certified nurse aide at the Corsica Good Samaritan Center. She later became the first social worker at this facility, a new role that she fulfilled with compassion and purpose. Evelyn had a heart for evangelism, loving to teach Sunday school to the Native American children at the Lake Andes Sunday School for 28 years. Within her own community, she enjoyed ladies Bible study, teaching Sunday School and was instrumental in organizing and teaching Calvinettes (a community girls church program) for 17 years. Personally, her home was a place of open doors and open hearts. She regularly hosted pastors and teachers, welcomed a DCHS student in need of boarding and lovingly embraced foster grandchildren and step-grandchildren as her own. Evelyn dearly loved her six children, 35 grandchildren and 81 great-grandchildren, each one holding a special place in her heart.
Her relationship with the Lord was deeply personal and unwavering. Through life's joys and sorrows, Evelyn remained steadfast in her faith, drawing strength and peace from His presence.
