Evelyn Purvis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by F.L. Sims Funeral Home - East Point Chapel on Jun. 30, 2025.
Evelyn Purvis was born on May 27, 1948 in Chicago Illinois to Mr. Emanuel Purvis, Sr. and Mrs. Beatrice Purvis. Evelyn raised in the Altgeld Gardens Community, and attended George Washington Carver Elementary and High School, graduating in the class of 1966. Following high school, she attended Wilson Junior College for two years. Christ being the center of Evelyn's life at an early, she dedicated her life to Him and joined the Mount Olive Baptist Church and the pastorship of the late Reverend F.I. Woodson. She was very active in Sunday School, a member of the Sunshine Choir under the direction of Sister Idella Barnes. In later years she joined the Adult Choir and eventually became its director. Evelyn relocated to the Atlanta area in 1989 with her sons, Michael and Christopher whom she raised in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Each day before school, they shared in daily devotion setting the tone of a great day. In 1990, Evelyn joined the Israel Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend William Smith. She immediately became an active servant of the Youth, Athletic, Junior Mother's, Mother's and Deaconess ministries. Due to her love of family, Evelyn would make frequent trips back to Chicago to assist with her mother, as well as taking the reigns of rearing her grandson, Zaveon. On Monday, March 24, 2025, God called Evelyn from her earthly tabernacle to her eternal home. Evelyn Purvis will be missed by every life she touched. She was preceded in death by her parents, and youngest son, Christopher. She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Darryl and Michael; 10 grandchildren, three great grand-children, siblings, Teresa, Emanuel, Cornelius, and Maurice; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
