Evelyn Joyce Smith (née Tezel)
Evelyn Joyce Smith (October 13, 1932 – February 16, 2026) passed away at the age of 93, leaving behind a legacy of devotion, accomplishment, and kindness that touched the lives of many. Her journey began with her graduation from Jefferson High School in May 1949, where she was a proud member of the Jefferson Lasso Dance Team. Evelyn's spirit and determination were evident from her earliest days, setting the foundation for a lifetime of meaningful contributions.
Evelyn began her working life as an usher at the Woodlawn Theatre during the vibrant 1960s (1960–1961), where she was part of the excitement surrounding events like the memorable Alamo premiere with John Wayne. She then embarked on a distinguished 31-year career at Southwestern Bell, where she worked diligently and was a proud member of CWA Local 6143. Her commitment extended to 17 years at Ruidoso Downs Racetrack (2000–2017), where her dedication was appreciated by colleagues and patrons alike.
Beyond her paid work, Evelyn's love for her community shone through her extensive volunteer efforts. Her remarkable service with the San Antonio Livestock and Rodeo Raffle Committee spanned 35 years, during which she helped raise nearly half a million dollars for scholarships through SALE (San Antonio Livestock Exposition); her participation in the Silent Auction and Calf Scramble further demonstrated her dedication. Evelyn also gave her time to the Medina County Food Pantry (1996–2020), Ronald McDonald House, the Juvenile Diabetes Walk, the Lions Club, and many other causes, always striving to uplift those around her.
She was a devoted member of the Harlandale Rebekah Lodge #179 for around 70 years, contributing her time and energy to its charitable and fraternal activities. As an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, Evelyn enriched her faith community with her presence and support. She contributed to organizations such as SYLO, SISDEF, Birdies 4 Charity, ACT and Pioneer Luncheons, and the Leukemia Society, embodying the spirit of service and generosity.
Evelyn's legacy is one of compassion, resilience, and unwavering commitment to family, friends, and the broader community. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her, inspiring future generations to follow her example of service and integrity.
