Fidele Vincent Plastini, 101, passed away peacefully on April 30th, 2025, at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. Fidele was blessed to be surrounded by those who loved him in the weeks leading up to his passing.
Fidele was born on a cold snowy day, February 6th, 1924, in Tuckahoe by his Aunt Jenny. Born with a veil over him, his blessings started early in life. He would say his greatest blessings were his family. He was the son of Frank and Isabella Plastini (Viola) and the oldest brother of 7 children. In 1956 he married the love of his life Louise Plastini (Zegarelli). They had two beautiful children Fred Plastini and Faith Perrone (Plastini). He later became the grandfather of Alyssa Plastini, Vincent Plastini and Louis Plastini.
After graduating high school and serving as a Sergeant in World War II, he used the GI Bill to attend Clarkson College. There he received a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering and became the first in his family to graduate college. He went on to work for SSV&K and was an engineer for many years. During that time he worked with NASA to aide in the Space Program. He played a major role in the designing of the Space Shuttle Hanger.
A proud but humble World War II veteran, Fidele served in three campaigns. He fought in France, Belgium, Germany and Czechoslovakia. He received a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, and a Combat Infantry Badge. Although it was hard for him to talk about the war, a story he always loved to tell was when his brother John paid him a surprise visit in July of 1945 in Germany.
"Someone came calling me that there was someone here looking for me. It was in Scheinfeld, Germany at the Castle - it was my brother John - was I surprised. He came to me, looked me over, touched my arms and said "You are all in one piece." He had heard that I was in the hospital. After a few happy tears and hugs we spent a very happy day together. It was very heartwarming. It was great. It was wonderful."
Raised to understand the importance of family, Fidele cherished every moment he spent with them. He lived in the house next to his childhood home which he built with his father and brothers. His house became a home as his wife filled it with her artwork, which Fidele displayed with pride. Another staple of his house is the giant fig tree, which many generations of Plastini's have taken care of. His backyard quickly became the go-to hangout spot for many generations. Fidele would tell you the secret to a long happy life is a glass of wine every night and everything in moderation. When asked about his life he said "I had a wonderful life you know, life was interesting."
In lieu of flowers the family is asking that you donate to Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. https://fund.calvaryhospital.org/ways-to-give/give-once/
