Lester Steele Obituary

Lester Conrad "Corkey" Steele, 92, of Sweetwater passed away Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Judy Hall officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home. A family and friend's visitation will be from 6-8 pm Monday at the funeral home.
Corkey was born Janaury 22, 1931 at May, Texas to Lester Julian and Ruth Odell (Michael) Steele and was an only child. He married Betty Sue Kidd, October 24, 1953 in Sweetwater. Corkey and Betty moved around where his work took him but came home to Sweetwater in 1976 from Morgan City, Louisiana. Corkey was an automotive mechanic and opened Corkey's Garage in 1976, until his retirement in 2005. He was a member of 4th and Elm Street Church of Christ. Corkey was an accomplished woodworker learning the trade from his father at a young age. He was an avid gardener and loved working in his yard. He was an absolute Family Man, never missing any thing in which had to do with family matters and loved being with family at every chance.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife; Betty December 6, 2019, eight brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law.
Corkey is survived by his son; Dwalyn Steele and wife Carolyn of Berwick, Louisiana, daughter; Pamela Counts and Richard Nelson of Roby, Texas, grandchildren; Dr. Julie Price and husband Jeff of Morgan City, Louisiana, Jordan Steele of Morgan City, Dwalyn Smith and wife Kayla of Clovis, New Mexico,Brittany Smith of Florida, Aaron Smith of Wisconsin, Conrad Smith of Roby, Elizabeth Galy and husband Andy of New Orleans and Allison Oubre of Berwick, Louisiana, twenty-one great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. He also leaves sisters-in-law; Ann Kidd Cearley of Denver, Colorado, Jane Kidd Collins of Centerville, Texas and Wanda Kidd Jordan of Crockett, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Steve Smith, Steven Smith, Kenny Kidd, Teddy Kidd, Dwalyn Smith and Jordan Steele.
Honorary pallbearers will be Danny Casbeer, John Glen Kidd, Rusty Hall, Derrick Kidd and Jerry Wayne Stuart.
