Freddie Lee Newsom, age 80 of Buchanan, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 1, 2025. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, on February 16, 1945, he was the son of the late Charles Lee Newsom, Sr. and Alma Rowe Newsom. In addition to his parents, Fred is preceded in death by his late wife, Kathryn Smith Newsom; a daughter, Katrina Newsom; a son, William Ellis; a sister, Carolyn Forrest; and brothers, Joe Newsom and James Newsom.
Fred was devoted to his family and his faithful companion chihuahua, Ila Mae. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1963 until 1967. Fred retired from UPS, and also loving to cook, had spent some time as a caterer. He also had a green thumb and grew beautiful flowers and vegetables. Fred's favorite vacation spot was the beach. An active member of Cochran Ridge Baptist Church, he loved his Lord and his church family
Left to cherish his memories are his daughters, Lisa Boatright of Villa Rica and Tammy & Steve Deese of Buchanan; his sisters, Mery Newsom Akins of Bremen and Barbara Houston & Dink of Bremen; and his brother, Charles Newsom, Jr and Marie of Douglasville. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and friends.
In keeping with his wishes, Fred was cremated.
A Celebration of Life for Fred will be held on July 12, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Cochran Ridge Baptist Church, 2083 Cochran Ridge Road, Hiram, Georgia 30141 with Pastor Jeff Childers officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM.
