George "Jerry" Vardaman, 88, of Marion, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Wesleyan Healthcare Center.
Born on April 9, 1937, in Marion to the late George and Marcella (Boone) Vardaman, Jerry graduated from Marion High School in 1957. He worked as a mold maker at Foster Forbes for over 42 years, retiring in 2000, and later delivered cars and parts for Southworth Ford. He attended Grace Community Church, Marion, IN, he was a member of Deer Creek Conservation Club, Tri-State Gas Engine Association, and the Fraternal Order of Police Martin Boots Lodge #79 of which he served as President in 1986. Jerry enjoyed shooting and reloading gun shells.
On September 30, 1997, he married Janet Jay Hammitt in Sidnaw, Michigan, and she survives.
Jerry is also survived by his children: Sandy (Rick) Ratliff, Bill (Marla) Vardaman, Patty (Victor) Short, Barbara (Ron) Anderson, and Rob Hammit, Jr.; his sister, Betty Goodman; grandchildren: Dr. Noel (Catina) Ratliff, Nick (Megan) Ratliff, Derrick (Hunter Pinder) Ratliff, Josh Vardaman, Elizabeth Short, Damon (Stephanie) Hammitt, David (Maggie) Anderson, Katrina (Chris) Robinson, and Cayla (Gary) Duckwall; and great-grandchildren: Kyle Ratliff, Courtney Ratliff, Kiera Duckwall, Corbin Duckwall, Oliver Hammitt, Kaycee Tedder, Jonathan Ratliff, Marcus Ratliff, Andrew Ratliff.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, George and Marcella Vardaman; brother in law, David Goodman and Daughter in law, Tina Marie Hammitt.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Fairmount Chapel, Armes-Hunt Life Celebration Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 415 S. Main St., Fairmount, IN 46928. The family will receive friends and family Saturday for 12:00 - 2:00 PM at the funeral home followed by a LIfe Celebration Service at 2:00 PM with Dr. Tom Mansbarger officiating. Interment will be at Park Cemetery, Fairmount, IN .
